Hey guys, I received my NP7358 from XOTIC PC a few days ago, and everything is great except for the fact that the fan in the upper left corner makes a constant grinding noise (almost like the sound a mechanical hard drive makes).

I contacted XOTIC PC via email and talked to a nice guy named Eric. We went over a few things and he offered to have a new fan shipped to me to put in myself. I said yes, but now I'm having second thoughts.

    1. How difficult is it to take out the old fan and install the new one?

    2. Has anyone ever had a fan noise problem with a Sager machine that was fixed with a new fan? From what I'm reading on this forum fan problems seem to be a semi-common thing with Sager. What if the new fan has the same issue?

    Thanks.

The usual fan problems are how they ramp up, not how they work in general. Replacing fans should be very easy if nothing has changed. Probably need to undo a small harness and replace. Don't see why it would be hard because sager's are usually one of the best, if not the best for being user serviceable. Many of the part underneath the hood should be easy to swap even for the most novice of users.

If you prefer to have it shipped in just let us know and we can set that up. You're welcome to give it a shot first, but if you're uneasy about it dont stress about it too much.
You have at least a 1yr parts warranty so if you run into fan issues again we'll take care of you.

Hey Hutsady, thanks for the kind words. I'm going to try to put the fan in myself. In your experience, does the situation with the fan that I described normally end up getting fixed?

You're very welcome. It does sound like it is a bad fan which should be fixed by replacing it. If you replace it and there is still an issue we'll help troubleshoot some more to figure out what else it may be.

It might be the bearing. Sometimes a lubricant will solve the problem, but a low grade lubricant (like WD-40) will only alleviate it temporarily. The fan is pretty simple to install, but don't put yourself too far outside of your comfort zone! All it encompasses are taking off some screws to get the back plate off, a few screws to take the fan out, and then disconnecting the cable from the board. The fan lifts right out from there.
