There's been a lot of questions regarding the Sager 5720 and the dual-core Intel processors. Hopefully I'll answer some here.
The new 5720 is going to be based on the Clevo M570U. Eurocom has already announced it's new version of it, called the "M570U Divine" - expect the Sager to be very close to the following specifications:
Base Spec:
# Up to 2.33GHz Intel 667MHz Frontside bus Core Duo processor
# Up to 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 Memory
# 16x PCI Express architecture
# Up to 320 GB of storage with two physical hard drives
# Upgradeable EUROCOM VGA technology: ATI Mobility Radeon X1800XT or Nvidia GeForce Go7800GTX with 256MB GDDR3 memory on 16-lane PCI Express
# Superb 17-inch Widescreen; WUXGA 1920-by-1200 pixels resolution; with Clear Glossy Surface; 16:9 Aspect Ratio
# ExpressCard/34 slot
# Multiple I/O Ports: One FireWire 400 port, four USB 2.0, one DVD-i, one Serial port.., just to name few
# Optical digital and analog audio I/O, built-in microphone and stereo speakers
# 8x Dual Layer, Multi DVD Burner; supports +-RW and -RAM; perrfect for CD/DVD Buring-on the-Go
# Excellent Wireless and Wired Networking: Built-in WLAN 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, and Gigabit Ethernet
# Removable Modular bay for Optical Drive, 2nd Hard Drive or 2nd Battery Pack
# Built-in 4-in-1 portable media Card Reader
# Built-in 1.3 Megapixels Webcam
# Excellent Surrond Sound System with SRS WOW technology
# Optional internal TV Tuner
# Full-size 102-key keyboard with a separate numeric keypad
The expected shipping date for the Eurocom is in "April 2006" - Sager should be right around then too.
An updated Sager 5320 (Clevo M560A) should be coming out soon as well, but I haven't any info on that. It will have the Core Duo processor and I believe it will have an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600.
Thanks,
Chaz

-
Thank You!!!!!! Have been waiting (as patiently as possilbe) for this announce since I blew the timing on the $650 coupon on the e1705 last week....going to do serious incantations to the "keep my GRX780 alive" dieties and hope it hangs on for the extra couple of weeks...

You might see some discounting, but I doubt it will be anything signifigant. If you plan on getting a laptop this powerful, get a Core Duo. -
i am getig core duo for sure. so as i understand it will be the same notebook except gpu and proc right? well then its not the same thing
-
I'm not real familiar with the new ATI cards... is the 1600 the replacement for the x700? is it the same level card or a better one?

what are advantages of x1800xt? does it run cooler? lower power consumption?

Be sure to read that review posted above.

That's the Clevo shown there, the M570U. It's only a matter of time before Sager rebrands it as their own. I expect it by the end of the month/early April.
-
whats the battery life of sonoma 5720 and is it actually going to improve by having ati 1800 gpu instead of geforce 7800gtx ?
-
on tech papers "Ati need less power to work". we'll soon discover!! =)
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Owners of the 5720 are reporting around two hours of battery life on the 5720; the power consumption of the Core Duo is about the same as the Pentium M today, and I can't see the X1800XT drawing more power than the Go7800GTX. Judging from that, the battery life should stay around two hours.
-
Lol, I blew that same coupon Lazlo. =(
But now I'm starting to get intrested in Sager's stuff, even if it is a bit more expensive. I'm drooling over that gpu let me tell you, but I'm finding it hard to figure one out for less than 2 grand. -

The Sager 5720 actually starts at a little less than $1,800 on www.powernotebooks.com, good price.
You can get a barebone and then add all the components yourself from www.ISTNC.com, the barebone is $1,300. The Clevo M570A is the same notebook as the 5720. -
I did not get into the buy barebones and then shop for parts elsewhere exercise (yet) but after reading the review of the Clevo M570A here I did go to ISTNC and the 3 Sager Resellers in the Sticky and configure the exact same system in all 4 places (sans Core Duo which is what I am waiting for) -- the Clevo was the least expensive but the range up to the most expensive was only $170 -- guess it comes down to what name you want on the box and the reseller ratings....
-
I made up a spreadsheet where I compared building it myself vs buying it complete. I've been updating it with parts prices, shipping, etc. over the last few months.
With the same parts specs in both machines, building it myself would save approx 60 dollars vs buying it complete from ISTNC. That's including shipping on all parts.
Parts were priced at newegg, mwave and buy.com, whichever had them for cheapest. All parts carry at minimum a 1 yr manufacturer warranty, most good RAM is lifetime, most HD's are 3 yrs.
It may not seem like much of a difference. But, if you're not scared of building computers, and don't need someone to fix it for you if it breaks, then you can use that $60 for a CPU/RAM/DVD-R/Bluetooth upgrade.
If someone is really interested and begs real hard, I'll make a post comparing my build to the major clevo/sager resellers. but you have to ask nice. -
Oh, purty pleeaaassse, Elminst, do post your build comparison. We're waiting with bated breath! Are you gonna get the P-M version of the 5720 or wait for the core duo and do a similar comparison?
-
My current spreadsheet is based on the current P-M model (clevo m570a). Since i am not in dire need of a laptop, i'll likely be waiting for the core duo version.
I'll add/modify my spreadsheet accordingly. -

Haha me too, I've been checking this board every day waiting for more tantalizing tidbits about the new model.
I'm looking forward to finding out what price it'll be, and if the other models will go down in price when this one comes out.

I've been reading some posts, seems like May/June is the release date. Clevo is supposedly holding it back so they can clear out the M570A inventory.
Chaz -
chaz are you serious? thats a pretty bad news. i have been waiting so long for this notebook. if clevo is holding it back how come it is sold in europe. or is it? is there any other comparable notebook out? with core duo and geforce 7800gtx/ati x 1800xt ?
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Well, there's the Sager NP-9750, but that's the only notebook I can think of that compares.
It's not that much longer . . I wouldn't deviate from what you want and get something to cope with in the mean time. You might regret it in a month, which is the worst possible feeling.
Chaz -
And w/ the Turion Dual Core due to ship May 9th this could get very interesting...wonder if a TurionX2 machine will come out before this one -- which I have (not so) patiently been waiting for for months now to replace my dying Sony...oh well....
-
guess i will have to be patient. hope i will not regret it

Because I hate just hearing rumors, I tried to get the info straight from the distributors.
Below is who I contacted and what I received from their reps:
Clevo Taiwan = Phone Menu was only Taiwanese/Cheinese(?) so was not able to pass the menu options to talk to a person
PCTorque.com = No idea when it is to be released, does not even have any specs for it.
Powernotebooks.com, Discountlaptops.com, ISTNC.com, xvxonline.com = ~May-June release
Rockdirect.com = April 28 estimated ship date according to their website and forums. (Website contains configurable order page)
Eurocom.ca = May shipping ; already delayed from their original April 8th shipping. (Press release page in their website contains specifications.)
As for the price.
Because Rockdirect.com is the ONLY website at this time to have a configurable and to order version.
It seems that the M570U is ONLY a couple hundred dollars more than the M570A.
Comparing their prices for the XtremeCT (Clevo M570A) vs the XtremeCTX (Clevo M570U) with the exact same config:
XtremeCT (Clevo M570A) = £1264.00 / $2,214.67 ( USD conversion as of 4/12/06)
XtremeCTX (Clevo M570U) = £1399.00 / $2,451.26 ( USD conversion as of 4/12/06)
Price difference = £135 / $236.59 -
An email from Eurocom has informed me that they should have the new duo core 5720 on the website by end of April. Price should be about 100-200(CA) more than the regular pentium M versions.
-
My question is, how much will this redesign weigh? I'm going to college in the fall and it would be nice to not have to leave my laptop in my dorm room.
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
The weight is 3.8KG or ~8.4 lbs, so it is fairly light for a 17". The previous 5720 was 3.6KG, about 7.95 lbs.
