Update: 9/19. I am returning this laptop and will be looking into other brands. My power brick died today after owning my new replacement for 5 days in addition to discovering a new bent frame at the top of the screen lid. For 1800 bucks, Sager has demonstrated to me a severe lack of quality control.

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting on this forum.
I am wondering if I could get some insight into how my issue may be resolved. I recently ordered a NP8173-S through Sagernotebook.com and the package finally arrived last Friday via UPS. I recorded myself taking out and inspecting the laptop only to discover the back left exhaust vent to be smashed in and dented. The plastic grille pieces are snapped and the metal on the chassis surrounding the vent is warped and bowed outwards from the dent. The internal box with sager logo had a hole in the bottom, and the outside box was dented and badly taped, which leads me to believe either the internal laptop box fell out of the shipping box during transit and UPS put it back together, or Sager has terrible quality control. I spoke to customer service and they said they would have to wait until UPS processes a damage claim (UPS lists 7-10 business days to process, but frankly I am surprised Sager is not issuing me a return label immediately) and schedule a time to pickup before they can send me a replacement and or repair. Later in the day (after hours) I was issued an RMA number but the directions in that email asks me to mail it myself with insurance back to Sager...at my expense... I can't wait to speak with the CS rep on Monday to clarify.
The laptop is now on backorder until September 9. I will not accept a repair, and I will only take a brand new replacement since the chassis I received obviously suffered rough handling. There is no way in hell I will spend any money out of my own pocket besides the purchase price to resolve this issue caused by either Sager or UPS.
1. Can anyone with similar experience share if and how the issue will be resolved?
2. Can anyone attest to Sager's level of customer service?
3. How would a different reseller handle this issue? (It sounds like all the resellers order through sager anyways? Please correct me if I am wrong, I am under the impression that Sagernotebook.com is Clevo's retail arm)
4. If all works out in the end do you guys have a recommended shipping (that doesn't break the bank) option to ensure safe handling?
If I end up getting screwed over I will not hesitate to initiate a credit card charge back through my bank as I have video footage+pictures of the whole unboxing. The model I purchased is now on backorder until September 9, so I will have to wait an additional 2 weeks+ shipping time in addition to the 2 weeks I've already waited to receive my initial order. My experience so far is going downhill fast.
Any response would be greatly appreciated!
Additional details: Shipping box has no holes but is really dented up/scraped up and shows very poorly applied double taping which could be signs that the internal box fell out of the shipping box. The internal laptop box with sager's logo has a large hole (2.5-3 inches) in the bottom which seems to have matched up with the damage impact location on the laptop. The top of the internal box near the handle has a small puncture hole at least 1inch wide.T̶h̶e̶ ̶i̶n̶t̶e̶r̶n̶a̶l̶ ̶b̶o̶x̶ ̶a̶l̶s̶o̶ ̶h̶a̶s̶ ̶a̶ ̶h̶a̶n̶d̶w̶r̶i̶t̶t̶e̶n̶ ̶n̶u̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ ̶s̶e̶v̶e̶r̶a̶l̶ ̶d̶i̶g̶i̶t̶s̶ ̶l̶o̶n̶g̶ ̶l̶o̶c̶a̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶n̶e̶a̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶h̶a̶n̶d̶l̶e̶.̶ ̶I̶ ̶r̶e̶c̶a̶l̶l̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶R̶M̶A̶ ̶e̶m̶a̶i̶l̶ ̶r̶e̶q̶u̶i̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶I̶ ̶w̶r̶i̶t̶e̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶R̶M̶A̶ ̶n̶u̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶r̶e̶t̶u̶r̶n̶ ̶p̶a̶c̶k̶a̶g̶e̶.̶ ̶I̶ ̶a̶m̶ ̶w̶o̶n̶d̶e̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶i̶f̶ ̶S̶a̶g̶e̶r̶ ̶j̶u̶s̶t̶ ̶r̶e̶c̶y̶c̶l̶e̶d̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶e̶l̶s̶e̶'̶s̶ ̶r̶e̶t̶u̶r̶n̶ ̶b̶o̶x̶,̶ ̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶s̶e̶ ̶s̶e̶n̶t̶ ̶m̶e̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶b̶o̶d̶y̶'̶s̶ ̶e̶l̶s̶e̶ ̶r̶e̶t̶u̶r̶n̶e̶d̶ ̶l̶a̶p̶t̶o̶p̶.̶.̶.̶ ̶w̶h̶i̶c̶h̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶e̶i̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶c̶a̶s̶e̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶h̶i̶g̶h̶l̶y̶ ̶u̶n̶p̶r̶o̶f̶e̶s̶s̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶.̶ ̶T̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶j̶u̶s̶t̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶s̶p̶e̶c̶u̶l̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶h̶o̶w̶e̶v̶e̶r̶.̶ Came home after double 15hr shifts at the hospital and realized the handwritten number is my order reference number, silly me.
8/29 - New Update after speaking with David@Sager over the phone today:
David assured me that Sager will send me a replacement laptop asap at no additional cost regardless of what UPS decides. Unfortunately the replacement wont be built and shipped until September 9 when they receive a new shipment of laptop chassis. My first conversation on the day of discovering the damage was scary in that I was told a replacement would have to wait on UPS's decision to refund or not, but has now been clarified. I will report back with further updates regarding resolution to my situation.

A DO A (dead on arrival) should be replaced without any expenses on your part as the shipping is usually insured so the reseller would get their money anyway. Next time order from HIDevolution as their customer service is the best and if you choose their global warranty option then any RAM shipping costs are covered by them through the warranty period. Additionally their laptops comr with thr Prema BIOS/VBIOS which Sager doesn't offer

Thank you for your response Phoenix!
1. Do you know how much more overclocking would be allowed with the custom bios vs sager's default bios?
2. Is there any way to flash this custom bios onto my unit if it is replaced?
3. Is the global warranty only for buyers living outside of the US?
4. Does HID require a UPS claims processing time before issuing a replacement if a DOA happens? Idk why Sager is not just issuing me a return label... -

Hi there, please PM me with your details (Post twice more and it will unlock this) and I can follow up exactly what is happening for you. RMA shipping is covered regardless of DOA on the continental USA can Canada if you upgraded to cover there too as stated in our warranty terms and conditions.
Did you sign for inspecting the parcel on receipt? (ie not mark it as not inspected?) as that will complicate matters in chasing with UPS but I'm sure we can clear this up.
The packaging will have been in perfect condition when sent out.

My wife has refused delivery at the door when boxes look damaged on the outside. You never know what's happened on the inside. It's better to just be safe. Maybe opening it in the presence of the delivery person.

That works if the delivery driver is willing to stand there, which they might be if you say either they stand there while you open it or you refuse it.

From now on I am going to video record myself accepting packages, and then opening it on the spot all in one sequence. After reading some reports online on how UPS handles claims, I am very worried they may try to pin the damage responsibility on me. The other thing is, I've opened up worse looking boxes before and discovered perfectly fine products. The laptop package had dirty scrape marks on it probably from sliding in the truck or against other packages, but other than ****ty taping it looked okay. I was very excited for the laptop and the prospect of waiting even longer and sending back an okay looking box just didnt cross my mind. If there was a very obvious puncture to the outside shipping box, then I would definitely refuse the package.

I guess that "extra packaging" all the vendors charge a little extra for does do something after all. Granted I would expect they make sure it can get there safely at any rate.

It seems like an auto email sneaked out regarding the sending it back. Our RMA department will work with the customer and UPS to arrange a pickup time so that UPS can inspect the parcel. No payment is required for this.
During this time we usually offer the customer the chance to leave a deposit and cross ship a replacement machine, the deposit charge is cancelled as soon as UPS refunds the cost of the machine. It was not immediately offered as there was a delay to the new machines, however they will be coming in tomorrow so we can get one built up and shipped out ASAP if they want to go that route.
If you inspect it and find damage before signing you can refuse, call us up to let us know and either wait for it to get back to us or again so we can inpsect and ship a replacement or leave a deposit and get it cross shipped. It skips the step of it being picked up again.i_pk_pjers_i, Support.2@XOTIC PC, DontWorrys and 1 other person like this. -

This guide is for the P870DM but is for the 6700K so you can use the XTU settings at the end of post 1 in this thread as a headstart:
Clevo P870DM n00bie's guide
2) There is if you get access to it which at this time is not possible as Prema once trusted a person and did give him the BIOS, but then that guy distributed Prema's BIOS online and even claimed that it's his own work taking credit for it, so if it wasn't bought from a Prema Partner shop, your chances are slim.. At least that's how I see it. Furthermore, if you install the Prema BIOS and it didn't come preinstalled from the factory, then if you do anything wrong and have to send the laptop for repair and they discover that you had a custom/modded BIOS, then they might void your warranty.
3) Global warranty is for international customers who want to have the shipping covered for any part, be it a small part or the entire laptop. People living in the US would still get free shipping anyway without that global warranty.
4) Nope, see how they replaced my keyboard here without me even sending the old one first. if it's a small part that you are confident in installing yourself goes bad, they will ship that part to you and after replacing the part, they will send you a FedEx/DHL label to send the old part for free, or the entire laptop if need be. New update: Spoke with David@Sager on Friday Sept 2 and was issued a return label by David since UPS had not responded to my damage claim. I was told that Sager would not ship my replacement until they recieved the damaged unit. Since I wont be able to drop the package off at a UPS store myself until next Tuesday, David said it would be fine for me to use and test out the laptop at work since it seemed to boot up fine. I could feel airflow through the rear exhaust grille that was damaged so I think that fan is fine.
After downloading MSI afterburner and playing MechWarrior Online/Counter Strike GO on max settings, my max recorded GPU temps hit 86C and CPU reached 97C. Are these temps within range for a laptop?
My build includes IC Diamond thermal paste. i7 6700hq, 16gb ram 2400 ddr4, x400 256ssd, 1tb 7200hdd, 1070. All stock, no overclocks. (NP8173-S default config)
I will run some benchmark tests tomorrow along with more demanding games to see if these temps may go higher. If anybody has any suggestions or requests for certain tests, I'm all ears.
I need to decide whether I should just do a full refund if this generation chassis build is inadequate. I don't know if these temps may be result of other internal damages besides the dented vent.Last edited: Sep 4, 2016 -
Those temps are not even close to normal...seems like they did a very bad paste job. Can you pull the back panel off... put laptop on its side so its laying on its edge opened and run a game see if fans are ramping up? check if they are all plugged in...then I would also check the tim and see if the heatsink in rare event got loosened

What should be the max temp range for this chassis? -
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The fan and keyboard are controlled from the same chip. It might be worth reflashing your EC/BIOS but physical damage can impact temperatures. You would expect the low 80s under load with this machine.

Depending on which lighting profile you select, the fan will switch from spinning to full stop. I had a game running in the background when I discovered the Sager backlight control application and toggled around different lighting profiles. I noticed the fan noise will go from loud to completely silent, and later in the day I noticed MSI afterburner had recorded temps reaching 97c in the CPU and 86c in the GPU. I suspect these temps may have been caused during the fan shutoff due to this application. I took off the back panel to confirm fans were working and if this application had direct influence on the fans... which it did. Had I been running more intensive applications, this particular issue could have possibly damaged components by letting them overheat.
Important: This is on a unit that arrived via UPS with damaged fan exhaust grill due to puncture in the package. No internal damage could be discerned by me, however I am no expert by any means. I have already been issued a RMA ticket/replacement for this unit but was told I could use it and test it before I ship it back. I don't know if this issue is present on other units so I thought I'd show this problem.
i7 6700hq, gtx1070 NP8173-S default build configuration with IC Diamond thermal paste
I apologize for barely any audio and bad lighting conditions, this is the best I could do while at work. If requested, I can make a better video when I have time at home.
I am going to benchmark and run games without messing around with this program to see if temps will reach this high again.i_pk_pjers_i likes this. -
Its not issue present in other units luckily. Once you get replacement ups hasnt mutilated you should be quite happy when its functional! (I know I would be) mine doesn't even come close to temps or have any of These issues for example.
Definitely a sour first start though

Regarding your issue with the fan speed affected by the keyboard lighting control, maybe there is a bug in the software were changing between different modes on the keyboard controller also changes the performance profile on the Clevo Control Center, thus also changing the fan profile. This shouldn't be happening though. To be sure that the cooling system works as it should, you should be observing temps with the fans at full speed so that no other factor can affect your measurements.
IMO there is no damage done from overheating over a short period of time as there are throttling policies in place long before any damage is done. Of course if the CPU or GPU repeatedly overheat, there may be some extra wear in the long term. Either way, the thermal behavior you are seeing is not normal but you shouldn't be worrying if you are returning the laptop anyways. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes, certainly not normal, the EC is not happy for some reason which is causing that odd behaviour. Anything obvious around that ITE chip?
i_pk_pjers_i likes this. -
I ran games for a whole day without messing around with any fan control/lighting profiles and my max temps for CPU was 81c, GPU 77c per HWmonitor. Are these temps normal for this particular chassis with IC Diamond thermal paste?
I dropped off the laptop at a UPS store on 9/6 and Sager should receive it today 9/9. Hopefully my replacement gets shipped out today as well.Last edited: Sep 9, 2016 -

Sound pretty good to me!

I mean only while making the keyboard changes. So maybe have msi temp screen up then make your keyboard lighting change and see if the temps kick past a turn on threshold for some reason.
-
I did not mess with the lighting again during gaming unfortunately.

No worries. It was just to test the keyboard/ec/fan.

Excellent news, here's to many hours of happy usage
-
As promised, NP8173-S Unigine Heaven Benchmark results: http://imgur.com/QeM0uTj
I have started a new thread on this issue here.
BAD NEWS: I spoke too soon earlier. My brand new replacement laptop is exhibiting the same fan control issues as the first unit. I think everyone should avoid buying this model until this issue is fixed.
Windows 10 OS with latest updates.
I played several games during the past 48 hours and I have noticed this in order:
1. Upon fresh boot from full shutdown, fans behave normally and react to usage load.
2. I performed a fresh boot up, opened HWMonitor, and played WoW, BF4, CS:GO ultra settings. Temps were great with CPU at 69c and GPU at 74c tops. These temps were the same during benchmarking with Heaven.
3. I tried to replicate the steps needed to trigger fan shutoff on my first unit after playing games, so at this time the rpm's were about medium and I could still hear them. I figured this would be a great time to listen for fan shutoff by playing with the keyboard profile app. After toggling all the available lighting options, I did not hear any fans ramp down, so I thought: that's great, this one has no issues! I started resuming BF4 and after quitting around 20 minutes later, HWMonitor showed my new Max temps reached: http://imgur.com/ViBkz3E. (I did notice during this boot session, I heard my fans go quiet for a split second 3 different random times, during gaming but not when I toggled lighting profiles) So now I'm thinking WTF? I performed a full shutdown (not restart), and then started up the laptop again. All fans kicked into high gear upon turning on. During this new boot session, I only opened up HWmonitor and played games and did not open the keyboard lighting app. Temps were good all across the board, low 70's and below.
4. Full shutdown and start up again. Started HW monitor. Started Sager keyboard app, toggled random profiles. Closed Sager keyboard app. Started WoW, and noticed fans not ramping up, still very quiet. I stared at HWmonitor and watched as the gpu temp rose steadily to 86c, and during this time all 3 fans did not react to temperature and turn on, still quiet. I immediately performed a system restart (Not full shutdown) and upon boot, the fans still would not turn on and react to the high temps. Upon loading into windows, I performed a full shutdown. Immediately upon boot, the fans kicked into high gear. During this boot session, I played games for a little while and the fans reacted normally to usage load. With HWmonitor and the game running in the background, I decided to try opening the keyboard app again. Upon first lighting profile toggle, the left side GPU fans shutoff completely. The cpu fan was still in high gear. I watched as the GPU temps started to rise into the 80's. Another full shutdown, fans acting normally.
I called Sager today 2pm PST and spoke with David about this issue. He said he would forward my contact information to one of his more knowledgeable techs and they would call me back. I really like this laptop but if this does not get fixed I will be requesting a return/refund.
Can any other NP8173 config owners chime in and see if their laptops have the same issue?Last edited: Sep 17, 2016 -
How about a system restore. And this time no hwmonitor?
-
I don't see any issues with HWmonitor affecting fan controls on google. I am currently using this laptop for work for the next few days at least so I will unfortunately not be able to perform a fresh restore just to see if HWMonitor is the reason behind fan rpm issues. Also, I tested games with HWMonitor present during several sessions and the fans worked normally with no temp issues. This issue only arises after I have used the keyboard lighting application. This leads me to believe it has something to do with this particular program.
