Hi all,
I currently own a Acer aspire 5520G. Perfect for office work and some low end games. What I want is a desktop replacement with at least 1.5H battery life ( my acer does 50 min :S ).
I want to be future proof for at least 2 to 3 years. With that I mean demanding games on high to med and some photoshop programs running smoothly.
Googling gave me the result of the Sager NP8690. With an Intel i5 and a GF 460.
Is it possible to manually upgrade the cpu myself to an i7 840QM? Or does that require bios editing or motherboard replacement? ( like in a dell )?
And is there much advantage of 4 to 8 GB of RAM? 1066/1333mhz?
Thank you in advance!

the 8690 is the fastest 15" on the planet at the moment and is user upgradable for the ram and hard drive but im not sure about the cpu. that might invalidate the warranty.
why not configure it with the i7 from new or is that out of your budget.
4gb is fine for now but 8gb is future proof but can be updated at a later stage. -
Thank you for the respond!
The i7 is to expensive for me right now. I can buy a new i7 9xxqm series cpu when I will go to taiwan in january. When it voids my warranty I can just put my old cpu back in right? or isn't it that easy?
How about the gpu? It is standard with a 460 but is it possible to upgrade it to a 470 when I have some more money?
Or is it better to wait and order it complete with the i7 and a 470?
BTW. What is the best sager website? The prices are almost the same just about 50USD difference between them. How about warrenty in the netherlands?
If it is the fastest 15" at the moment then I will seriously buy it! -
It is the fastest 15" only if you add some good parts in it. Some laptops have a seal on top of the CPU that when it breaks it will void warranty but I'm not sure how it is with Sager/Clevos so don't quote me. If you can, I suggest waiting to get the i7 and 470. New Sandy Bridge processors will be coming out next quarter and by then you might be able to afford the 9xxqm series. You would want a global warranty if you will be traveling a lot. Most of the warranties are US only at some resellers.

Yes the GPU is user upgradable. It cost less to get the 470M with your order if that is your goal. Buying the card kit later is expensive. The 470M does offer a good measure of increased performance. However, the 460M is a great performer too...

i thought you was in america as you mentioned sager. sager is a reseller of the clevo chassis. if you are in the netherlands then you can take a look through the clevo guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...-0-faq-reseller-info-read-before-posting.html which has a list of resellers in that country.
in the uk the best reseller is imo Kobalt -
The seller on that list is bankrupt 2 months ago! Sad enough.
And the other seller Laptops4u is also bankrupt! Damn crisis!
I might order it from the UK and upgrade the warrantry so it won't cost me much if my lappy crashes!
Will need to do some searching about the warranty and i might wait to get some more money. It's my bday in january so might collect some money! haha!
Is Sager just US? and Clevo is a notebook manufacturer that sells its notebooks to specific brands? right?
Bit confusing but I think I understand it right now! -
Clevo is the distributor and Sager Xoticpc and Power Notebooks are resellers in the usa and Kobalt sell them in the uk.
kobalt offer 2 years warranty included with an extra year upgradable.
hope that helps.
