It's disappointing, but if Ivy Bridge-E CPUs are compatible, perhaps Intel will be able to get 8 cores and 16 threads inside a 130W TDP. One can hope! I know I am...
-
I can't see how this relevant to notebooks or sager/clevo.

Is E mean enthusiast line or something?
-
E is Extreme.
We are talking about the next generation Sandy Bridge top of the line desktop processors here, that - if we are to believe the rumours - will be fitted to Clevo's successor to the X7200. -
It's no rumor. The P270WM motherboard was featured at Computex 2011. There are pics in this forum and a quick Google search will also show this.
The 'E' in Sandy Bridge-E is a designation for "Enthusiast" or "Extreme" (take your pick as to which category you apply to). -
I know. I have seen the pics. But still, the machine is not here before it's here
Too many examples, through the years, of prototypes of products that never did see the light of day. -
might be a good idea to skip gen 1 of SB-E.
-
Here's an interesting part of the SB-E chips.
Ivy Bridge to have 77W max TDP, backwards and forwards compatibility explained

Now that AMD's Bulldozer has proven to be an absolute disaster, Intel has no reason to push the technology threshold with 8-core CPUs. Hell, they have no reason to even release Ivy bridge in a timely manner.
AMD has screwed up so badly here, the repercussions are going to linger for a long time. -

^^^How true. It may be a long time before AMD will be a REAL competitor in the CPU market.

Make sence and good to know for future Intel buys.

And really 8 cores... doesn't it sound overkill? I don't known many programs that take advantage of it... -
If I had 16 threads in my CPU, I'd spend a long time staring at the Task Manager screen giggling like a little school girl as all threads just idled.
You know you would too! Don't deny it!
It's true that 8c/16t right now is absolutely insane and not needed, but down the road it would be. Always good to plan ahead. -
The next Xbox and Playstation will push the 6 and 8 core debate for Intel, as far as gaming goes. And that's 2013.
-
Wonder why they didn't say anything about USB 3 ports on that motherboard spotted at Computex?
-
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
USB 4.0!
Now with added disappointment!
All kidding aside, if it supports SB and higher, it should have USB 3.0 standard.

However, nothing in this next beast will be overkill imo. A comparison is the upcoming ZL1 Camaro with 550+ HP. No overkill there also...

Look at things now, and many games utilize quad core effectively (Battlefield 3 is certainly going to be one of these games). -
intel can do 8c16t but it will extremely expensive bcz its rare....have to select from thousands of wafers

Nothing is too overkill for Folding, but i don't recommend folding on a notebook.

this will really push the weight/size difference between a shuttle PC+monitor and a 18in SLI laptop with 2 250w+ power bricks, etc...
-
According to the article on VR-Zone IB CPUs will have a max of 77W. 300W should be enough if that's the case.
No 8-Core SandyBridge CPUs
