My NP8662 arrived today. I opened the box like a child with a Christmas gift, only to realize I forgot to order an XP CD from ebay.
This is my first custom laptop, so I don't know what's gonna happen when I turn it on with no OS installed. Should I wait until I receive the CD, or is there something I can do with it?(e.g., checking if there's no malfunctioning hardware)

Download the Windows 7 RC on another computer and either make a DVD or bootable flash drive so that you may install it and then you will be set for now.

Actually, it really depends on your connection because it didn't take me anywhere near 6 hours to download.

It should basically run through the BIOS POST routine, and then terminate with an error indicating that it could not find the boot device. It should then sit there with the cursor winking slowly at you.

25 min to download mine. Just the standard Comcast 8MB line. Think my roommate was playing WoW at the time. Likely could have gone faster.

Throw Win7 on there. You'll find you like it leaps and bounds above XP.

I think he's talking about how everybody suddenly changed the topic to how long it took them to download win7. Original time quote was so far off from everybody else's that we all had to voice our opinions.

If it takes a while to receive your CD, then you can install a copy of of Windows 7 and play around with it a bit. I jst now finished downloading the 2.36 GB ISO from Microsoft site, in less than 1 hr. The download speed depends on your connection of course :) . Or you can take a different route by downloading Ubuntu - its free and only 700 MB or so. Have a feel of LNX before going to Windows permenantely.

When my Sager arrived yesterday, I found it oddly easy to set up. Windows Vista x64 install only took about 20-30 mins. and the included driver CD was a big help. After the 50+ windows updates installed, my computer is up and running perfectly. The only driver missing is the one for the fingerprint scanner, which is fine by me as I have found them to be pretty unnecessary from past experience.

ok, So I'm thinking about getting a sager without an OS because I can pick up vista ultimate for the time being until windows 7 comes out. And I can get these for like $10-$15 from my university. If I chose not to have the OS preinstalled, does it still come with a driver package/cd because that would help out?

The last time I tried to download 3Dmark06 (600mb), I had to try quite a few times, cos of data corruption over 3G connection (40kb/s dl). Ended up asking a friend with fibre to get it for me. I asked him to download W7 overnight for me, easy peezy. :)

You just download the drivers off Sager/Clevo's site

    I really should have... ;_; Could've saved 100 bucks!

The reason I'm not using 7 anytime soon is the compatibility. From what I've heard it's on par with vista as far as compatibility goes, and lots of my programs don't work on vista.

So I got the thing running...still installing stuff. Like everything so far except the blurry font, but that's probably because I'm using XP.(changing resolution didn't help) And the cooler that I ordered with the laptop is a piece of crap. I wish I could return this because I had a better one that I returned to BestBuy because I thought this one would work better.

edit: also hate the location of usb ports. Flash drives and such get in the way of the mouse. Those in the back make it annoying to plug in stuff too. Lastly the left ctrl key is too far away. I use it for crouching in fps, and I bet I'll mistakenly hit function key often because that's where ctrl key used to be in all my previous laptops.

lolz, funny, most people (including me) think its the other way around?!?!

IMO the one who came up with the fn key on the far left should be impaled by something blunt lolz jk. But if the far left fn key works for you then thats kool too. normal desktops have the ctrl key to the far left, so i would think that going back to a laptop with the ctrl key to the far left would have been better than visa versa.
