it cant even eek out 2 hours if im doing nothing but web surfing. I intentionally bought components with maximum battery life in mind and im hearing of people with more draining components getting 2 and a half hours. i use power saver battery mode, silent mode, and i even have the appearance set to performance.
what could it be?

What you got plugged into the computer? stuff like external hard drives, flash drives, wireless mice, bluetooth, printers, etc. can be a drain on the battery life of the system.

Vista Battery Saver -
dont expect too much. i mean, it is a 9800GT in a 15in chassis

It's easy to say that rather than think of a useful answer...
A lot of people have his same laptop and get much better battery life, it's definitely a cause for concern.
Can we get a list of services, operating speeds and voltages from CPU-z and GPU-Z? Are you using RMClock to throttle/undervolt? Any overclocks?
Also, I hope you meant that you have it set to 'power saver' and not to performance as your first post indicates. -
never mind

What kinda of battery life are most people getting with this model on power save mode or whatever the most battery efficient mode is? I guess I'd specifically be looking at the Sager NP8660 with the lowest processor on there.

Try underclocking your cpu and/or gpu manually; I'm not sure how good the power save mode is.

I get 2 and a half hours with 2 gigs of ram more than him, a 7200rpm drive, and a higher processor (although a 25w one, his is 35w i believe), so I'd be worried if I was him.

I can get 2 hours in power saver mode, browsing internet on WiFi. I was able to play around 30-40 minutes of Crysis on battery, high performance + around 20-30 of Excel spreadsheets, wifi turned on but not connected (and NO, I wasn't in class

power off bluetooth, power off the camera.
disable the fingerprint scanner (if you dont use)
also, i obviously get more battery life by having the ethernet cord in and wireless off.
all that said, including your previous steps and i get a bit over 2 hrs (2:20 sometimes w/ t9500; 320 72k drive; 4gbram; (4gb)turbomem; also, because i'm not sure if it matters, but the 1680 screen, not the 1920)
Not getting the battery life id expect M860TU
