The 8170/170HM is a very solid machine, I highly recommend it. If you were to compare it to the big brands they're actually cheaper.

You can easily access components for replacement or upgrading, something that's not common for laptops.

Not sure about the Canadian market but you could try a different reseller and they may give you a better deal.

    Good luck

It all depends on YOUR preference to be honest.

I'm not sure about the performance of the 560m with 3GB against the 6990m with 2GB, I would do research and look for benchmark tests and compare the results.

What do you need 12GB for? Video editing? 8GB is more than enough for gaming as most games focus on video rather than CPU usage.

I don't need 1.5 TB of hard drive, I have an external drive for storing things like pictures and such... it all depends on your preference and bank account :)

The 6990M is MUCH better than the 560M. You would not see anywhere near the same performance with the Asus. The higher price is deffinitely worth it. IMO, any Asus over $1100 is overpriced due to that 560M being the only GPU option.

The graphics card is really the only part that matters when you're looking at a gaming machine (the CPU/Memory/etc all come in to play, but the GPU is what really differentiates whether it's a mid-range or high-end model).

The 6990 is roughly 2x better than the 560m. Here are some benchmarks:

    AMD Radeon HD 6990M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

How long do you plan on using this machine?

The 560m will hold up in the short term, but the 6990m is the far better investment if you plan on using this computer for a couple years.

Good to see someone else from Kamloops on this forum - I'm a student at the University. If you end up looking at Asus machines, KCC (local comp store) may be able to price match with NCIX or any other online retailer. I have price matched some components and monitors, but never a whole computer. You may be able to get an onsite service warranty with them as well.

The Asus is a good machine but the Sager is just better. If you are really on a budget check out this guy's 8170 in the for sale/trade forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/notebooks-desktops-sale/631585-fs-sager-np8170-2720qm-gtx-485m.html

Hope that might help with your decision but it probably just added more confusion...

    ???

We're the top Canadian Sager reseller, i highly doubt Sager told you that they don't have us as a certified reseller.

Anyways back on topic, yes we can help you get the laptop once you get to Kamloops, shipping takes 14 days usually if everything is in stock. But that number can be reduced drastically since Kamloops is on the west coast.

I just ordered the same config. as you (considerably cheaper in the states) but I'm pretty stoked about the machine. It seems like a solid beast - Asus is great, but not as powerful, MSI is pretty, but not as powerful and a bit weaker build. The Sager is all about quality.

The 3GB card will perform exactly the same as the 1.5GB.

The Sager will perform a lot better than that assuming you get the 6990M. Those are the specs you could get out of a NP8130 for $1k (minus the 3D screen of course).
