The 8170/170HM is a very solid machine, I highly recommend it. If you were to compare it to the big brands they're actually cheaper.
You can easily access components for replacement or upgrading, something that's not common for laptops.
Not sure about the Canadian market but you could try a different reseller and they may give you a better deal.
Good luck -
and how a bout a asus g74 ? what you prefer? asus with gtx 560m 3gb , 12gb , 1.5tb full hd, which one you prefer?
-
It all depends on YOUR preference to be honest.
I'm not sure about the performance of the 560m with 3GB against the 6990m with 2GB, I would do research and look for benchmark tests and compare the results.
What do you need 12GB for? Video editing? 8GB is more than enough for gaming as most games focus on video rather than CPU usage.
I don't need 1.5 TB of hard drive, I have an external drive for storing things like pictures and such... it all depends on your preference and bank account -
yeah, but i will buy on ncix.com or futureshop i can't customize, for me 500gb it's enought
-
you think that with the g74 i will play the same things that i play on the np8170 ? the g74 is better price than the np8170 and the only thing that is diferente is graphic card
-
The 6990M is MUCH better than the 560M. You would not see anywhere near the same performance with the Asus. The higher price is deffinitely worth it. IMO, any Asus over $1100 is overpriced due to that 560M being the only GPU option.

The 6990 is roughly 2x better than the 560m. Here are some benchmarks:
AMD Radeon HD 6990M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M - Notebookcheck.net Tech -
Hi Denis, The 6990M is a solid GPU, you other specs look good as well.
If you have any questions on buying from Canada check out my signature for a guide. Any other questions please feel free to ask. -
but the 6990 is 2 x better then the gtx560m 1.5gb gddr5 or the 3gb gddr5 ? my problem that i prefer buy localy, because i'm from brazil, so if i have some problem if any online store i can't sove this problem, i will live in kamloops for 10 months

the sager will be too more better then this configuration ? -
How long do you plan on using this machine?
The 560m will hold up in the short term, but the 6990m is the far better investment if you plan on using this computer for a couple years.
Good to see someone else from Kamloops on this forum - I'm a student at the University. If you end up looking at Asus machines, KCC (local comp store) may be able to price match with NCIX or any other online retailer. I have price matched some components and monitors, but never a whole computer. You may be able to get an onsite service warranty with them as well.
The Asus is a good machine but the Sager is just better. If you are really on a budget check out this guy's 8170 in the for sale/trade forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/notebooks-desktops-sale/631585-fs-sager-np8170-2720qm-gtx-485m.html
Hope that might help with your decision but it probably just added more confusion...

i looked the asus on kcc, yeah i want to stay with the computer for at least 2 years, my problem that i will only arrive at 29 january and the delivery time of the sager is like 17 bussines days at reflex notebook, i don't know either if they are good store, i asked sager and they said that don't have the reflexnotebook as certified reseller, you have a sager one ? you can help me to buy a sager when i arrive in kamloops ?
-
I am not sure if anyone mentioned this but ASUS have backlighted keyboard, Sager does not. I am waiting till they offer one and I will dump my ASUS for a Sager
-
We're the top Canadian Sager reseller, i highly doubt Sager told you that they don't have us as a certified reseller.
Anyways back on topic, yes we can help you get the laptop once you get to Kamloops, shipping takes 14 days usually if everything is in stock. But that number can be reduced drastically since Kamloops is on the west coast. -
-
I just ordered the same config. as you (considerably cheaper in the states) but I'm pretty stoked about the machine. It seems like a solid beast - Asus is great, but not as powerful, MSI is pretty, but not as powerful and a bit weaker build. The Sager is all about quality.
