I am about to order a new 8690 but am wondering if anyone knows if you can replace the stock blu-ray drive with a slot-load blu ray drive?

And does anyone know if Ava-Direct is a reputable source?

    Thanks!

I don't think you would be able to replace the tray-load with a slot-load, since the panels for the W860CU are non-standard (as with most notebooks).

I do believe Ava-Direct is a good reseller; NBR has done a review of one of their machines (maybe more). (EDIT: M980NU, D900F)

Thank you both for the replies! I had been searching for the slot-load option for a while now, but it never shows up in reference to the np8690, it always shows up in posts where the sager is being compared to the M17x which has a slot load...

As per Ava or Xotic, I like the customization through Ava... but am really tempted towards Xotic for a custom skin for the back of the screen...

Also, remeber that Justin of XoticPC is a frequent poster on these forums. He'll take care of you.

And just because I feel obligated to do it, GenTechPC also has their own rep on these forums, and Ken is at least as good as Justin in customer service.

No problem. Any particular reason you want the slot-load? You know that you wouldn't be able to use those smaller form factor CD's with slot-load drives?

I absolutely love the slot load... its almost entirely cosmetic of a reason for me. I have never come across using the small CD's, but I think I could sacrifice that possibility for being able to have a slot load. I also worry constantly about hurting the CD tray... but mostly, its cosmetic =)

And thank you again for both replies! I am definitely going to go for Xotic.

The wii has a slot load that takes 8cm disks, are you sure other drives can't?

I read somewhere that slot-loads couldn't take smaller discs; but that was a long time ago. So maybe newer drives (like the Wii as you say) can take them? IDK. Maybe an M17x owner can pitch in?
