I was wondering if anyone knows a place to get more RAM for my NP9170. I looked online but the only website i could find that had it was crucial, and if someone knows could they maybe tell me what ram is and isn't compatible (not sure if the motherboard uses a specific type of DDR3) so i could just look into that.

    Thanks.

as far as i know it takes SO DIMM DDR3 1600Mhz
crucial, corsair vengeance and most probably other makes but this is what my supplier uses.
how much ram have you already got and how much do you want to put in.

Just match the timing and speeds of your current RAM and you should be all good.

I have a similar question but for P150EM, my model RAM is:
    16JTF51264HZ-1G6M1
    Module Size: 4096 MBytes
    Memory Type: DDR3 SDRAM
    Memory Speed: 800.0 MHz (PC3-12800)
    Module Manufacturer: Micron Tech.

I have 8 GB (2x4 gbs), and want to add another 8 GB (2x4gbs).

My confussion and fears arise when i cannot find the exact model number (16JTF51264HZ-1G6M1), also many models state 12800S or 12800U, what the hell does that mean?
any concrete recs would be highly appreciated, i dont want to buy a desk decorator..

    cheers!

ive got the same lappy as you and mine is 1600Mhz (will check tonight exactly what make it is if you want).

if i were you i would download hwinfo64 from my sig below which will show exactly what sticks you have loaded.

2 ram spaces are in the base and the main 2 are under the keyboard so hopefully your ram is there as under the base is easy to get to.

I used hwinfo precisely, it shows 800mhz, but its 1600mhz, being dual channel it displays it that way, i searched this some time ago.
The brand its not a very know one (micron tech) so i wonder if buying another brand might affect performance, i have the available slots under the keyboard since you must always load the others first, not afraid to use them, many videos on how to do it.

this would be an example, are these compatible??

Almost right, it's 800x2 = 1600 because it's Dual Data Rate (DDR) memory (data is transferred to and from the module twice per clock). Dual channel works by interleaving chips but does not get reported in terms of module speed.
