I have been getting this alot , running Windows 7 64bit Clevo W860cu with GTX285m , I am running the latest nvidia drivers , I have done a complete windows reinstall, Ran Memtext86+ with no errors ,Ran Furmark for 15 mins @1920 max temp 84 degrees and completed test no issues.

Its driving me mad and makes Skyrim (which is the main offender ) a real pain , tried loads of internet tips but none work anyone else getting this problem on these machines

Have you been getting this fairly recently only?
You could try reverting back to older drivers. Some of the newer ones might not play well with your card.

Yup. Try 275.33, or try to over volt the card with a vbios mod.
There are a lot of reports on 285m playing silly with latest drivers.

275.33 is from june so best try newer whql first and then work backwards if they dont work.
you can find the latest 10 or so > NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search

how do you update your drivers? auto install or manual.
i recommend manual for all the older cards like ours.

use driver sweeper or driver cleaner and clean in safe mode.
if you need a walkthrough just ask.

I have thought about this , I wondered if my power supply was playing up but don't really know how to prove it.

I used gcpuz to monitor voltage when running Furmark but it never budged from 1.000v during test

It doesn't seem that you can change either the Voltage or the Fan speed on the laptop

I also wondered whether there had been any recent bios releases for the w860cu that are worth deploying

DJ - you still have your ---Kobalt Nexus M860TU / P9500 / 260GTX / 4gb Ram--- :) You had that when I bought my W860CU in March 2010 , is it still doing you proud ? have you had to replace anything on it?

yup its still going strong almost 4 years down the line.
9800GT died last march but was replaced under warranty for a 260gtx
hard drive is 99% perfect so on occasions it stutters with the 1% bad sector but after many scans i cant find the fault.
otherwise its been my best ever owned computer.

    ps. jg check pm

upgrading soon with the new backlit clevo soon.

This issue is almost never a power issue, 99% of the time it's purely drivers. The other suggestions of rolling back to older drivers fix it a lot of the time. For whatever reason, new drivers on old hardware seems to cause problems occasionally.

Well I have tried a few drivers from past and present and nothing works , still get the problem , the bit I don't understand is, if it is the GPU why doesnt it fail under extreme test on Furmark , it runs fine and never goes above 82 degrees at the moment, I really don't want to invest any money in laptop (or another one) if it ain't broke

As an update I have tested the power supply with a meter it is rated to output 16v it was actually outputing 19v

I am going to try some really old Grx drivers tonight to see what they are like , I am wondering whether I can get more success out of some pre Verde Nvidia drivers

check out the 186.81 drivers. best one nvidia ever released and most stable for our 2xx cards.

how are you updating them as if your not doing it in safe mode with driver cleaner/sweeper then they could be conflicting with lots of crap left behind in the registry by the previous drivers.

Ok , thx, any idea where I might pick up a link to 186.81 drivers that support mobile GPU's , I know GURU3d have old links but they tend to be for desktop GPU's only

Ok I tried the drivers that were on Clevo's site (via a link) for the GTX285M and they are no better in fact probably worse , my test game is Red Orchestra 2 I use this as I pretty much can be sure of getting TDR's fairly quickly , with this driver off clevo I was getting them on the menus!!!

The frustrating thing is that I have played this game in the past with no problems

I probably would except it is the GRX card if it wasn't for the fact that I can run things like furmark with no problems I will have to try a alternative approach and survey what drivers people are running with a GTX285m with success

As it turns out the 186.81 drivers don't support an GTX285m card I had to try an fudge a mod but it didn't solve anything

My alienware with gtx 285m crashed with newest nvidia drivers. Trying about 10 different drivers and stopped on 257.38 which recommend by alienware. 1 year no problems.

there was a lot of talk about this at the time as 285 wasnt shown on the list but im sure it was reported on here that it worked for many members.

the next one on the list is the 258.96 WHQL released on 19/7/10 which has 285 as supported.
