Not a hug deal really, but every now and again my mouse will stop working and Ill get a message on my screen saying something like.
A USB Device has malfunctioned and is failing to operate. etc. etc.
I just need to unplug it and plug it back in then it works again, but its kinda annoying. Its just your standard MS mouse. Anyone have any advice? It always happens to the port i plug my mouse in (the 2nd USB port on the side toward the back)
So I guess its either the mouse, or the USB port?
Thoughts anyone?

This might sound stupid but did your mouse come with its own drivers that you didnt install? I imagine most PnP devices will run but not optimally without their own drivers
-
I don't believe it came with drivers or any software. Was just a mouse in packaging - ya know?
-
Well, I cant tell if its the USB or the Mouse, I suggest using a different port for a while and see if the problem persists
-
Have you check this: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK ?
Also, for some troubleshooting: have you tried another USB mouse, another USB port? -
Have you tried a different USB port, as livesoft suggested?

Two things to check that come to mind immediately:
1) Check for firmware updates specifically for the USB hubs, and the chipset generally, and
2) firmware/software for the mouse from the manufacturer of the mouse.
The poster who mentioned that the mouse might run less than optimally using the standard default Microsoft drivers could be on to something - you might also check on the manufacturer's support website to see if they've flagged any compatability issues with your OS, or with particular chipsets. -
I kinda have a problem like this, but the mouse just lags instead of giving an error message. The mouse works fine on one of the side USB ports but not the rear ones

Have you tried another mouse? I had that kind of issue on my desktop. After plugging/unplugging for a while, it stopped. Also, this may seem dumb but installing the bundled software with the mouse usually helps.

That might also be caused if the mouse is not getting sufficient juice from the USB port - in notebooks each port isn't individually wired, instead, typically, there's one hot lead that feeds several, or all, of the USB ports; as a result, the port that's farthest from the lead can sometimes not deliver as much juice as it's supposed to according to the USB specifications; also, plugging something else into another USB port that draws a lot of current can also lower the amount of juice getting to other USB peripherals.

I have used two wireless mice and one wired mouse with my notebook all with their respective drivers. I tested every mouse with every USB port and only the two in the back lag. This mght be because of the USB power stuff Shyster was taking about. Livesoft could you test this on your 8660?

ooops nvm.

Sorry, since I got this laptop, I've only been using the 2 ports at the back (generally the upper one) and never had lag. Now I'm running on the other one and I don't seem to have any lag or freeze. My mouse is a Logitech G5 (wired). Sometimes, I had lag with this mouse on my desktop but it stopped after a while. I don't think there's a difference wherever I'm running on battery or not. I believe its more software related than because of the hardware. If you have time, try a Linux Live CD and see if it does the same thing.

:] grandhero I saw your post before you edited, but couldn't reply (10 char).
I tried updating mouse drivers because livesoft said it might be software related, and it worked...kinda, my wireless logitechs are running fine now but my wired mouse keeps lagging, I'm starting to think it's the mouse. -
Do you get the same lag regardless of which USB port you plug the mouse into?
