Neither Intel nor any 3rd party that we know of has made a SATA III controller for laptops.

Hopefully we will see one by next year.

SATA 300 is different from SATA III.

SATA 300 is a way of saying 3Gbps, which is SATA II speed.

    SATA III speed is 6Gbps.

Man at this price configured its only $374 more to go with the 9280 with a desktop processor and that if I'm going to spend that much I should just consider waiting for SLI 480m's.

    What do you guys think?

Well, the 880 has the USB 3.0. As well as the weight and size difference between 9280 and 880. Also, 880 only cost 2k if you config with i5, 9280 cost 2.6k if you configure with 480M. 600 dollars difference + No USB 3.0 + heavier for the desktop 930 processor. Still worth it though if you need the CPU power because desktop i7s are imba.

I dont care about size I'm buying this strictly for gaming. So would you recommend waiting for the x8100 SLI pricing and is it worth it to get the desktop processor vs Mobile for gaming?

X8100 is EoL, actually D900F also, they are actually abominations in Clevo's history, being split apart from D901C, one with desktop CPU, one with SLI. However, they are going to be combined back again into X7200. If you want the utmost power you can get X7200, but it's not going to be cheap. I doubt X8100 will get the 480M SLI, at most it will get will probably be 5870MR CF, because it's thermal design is not enough for 480M SLI.

So is there really that much of an advantage with a desktop CPU vs the i7-720m model in gaming?

No not really at all just when gaming with RTS games especially when doing LAN parties but besides that not much at all, good for animation and graphics though in a mobile package.

If you need the CPU, yes, especially for RTS games and other work purpose stuff.

About how much performance difference, let's just say that the top end 980X desktop is more than twice the speed of the top end 920XM notebook version.

The Sager NP8850 case is slightly larger to accommodate the new thermal solution. The nVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M will not go into your 870...safely that is!

To be precise Sager has stated "it is revised with a new bottom case in order to support NV GF GTX 480M". Judging by the price increase on the AC Adapter for the W880 it appears the power system has also been upgraded.

I know it doesn't really help with your W870, those with a 9280 Sager has released a upgrade kit to the 480.

    X8100 isn't EOL!

As mentioned the main (noticable) differences between the W870 and W880 are a USB 3.0 port and the under side which is a little thicker around the GPU area. Just a small facelift :)

Long time lurker; first time poster.

So is the Sager 8850 a modified 8760 with the following changes?

*) Can handle the higher power and cooling demands of the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M card.

*) Different cooling design on the bottom of the laptop.

    *) A little thicker.

*) Has one USB 3.0 port + three USB 2.0 ports.

Did the 8850 replace the Sentilic touchpads (tap-to-scroll) with the Synaptics touchpads to allow finger-slide scrolling?

Are the speaker volume/clarity improved on the 8850 over the 8760?

Tell Clevo we are highly disappointed that the gtx480m isn't supported with the w870cu. And.....that it makes no sense to preorder the w880u without even knowing what the performance difference is going to be between the 5870m and GTX480m.

There are physical differences between the 870 and 880 chassis which are necessary to accomodate the GTX 480M so though I can understant why you are disappointed unfortunately it can't be helped.

The W870CU / NP8760 are hardly "old news". They still have the latest chipset, the PM55 and run the latest i7 CPU's and can run the Ati Mobility HD 5870! Not bad in my book! :D

Nope their not bad in my book either and plus their awesome, especially the 15.6 one which is awesome and such a great alternative from the envy 15, people tend to forget about the 5870. I love that card so much. Justin good to have you back, all the contributions of the resellers are awesome.

I was just browsing Sager's website and what I see from the gallery is that the 8850 has 1 GPU fan. With a 480m in there I wonder if it can handle the heat. The 9285 on the other hand has two GPU fans which appear ideal for the undoubtedly hot GPU. From the gallery, the 8850's spacious and chiclet-style keyboard appears superior over the 9285's apparently cramped keyboard. Being a gamer and having a Gateway FX I can tell you that having a tiny Ctrl key SUCKS. In addition the arrow keys appear to be far too small on the 9285.

I doubt 8850 uses only a single fan, even 8760 uses 2 fans, and 8850 is just a modified 8760 with 480M and USB3, no point for them to change the design much, unless they are using something like one huge fan at the bottom or something...

Okay I think I was looking at the diagram wrong.

#2 refers to the smaller fan and the vents to the right of it, correct? Regardless, it appears 8850's second gpu fan is smaller than the type used on the 9285

9285 has 3 fans (or is it 4?), 8850 has 2 fans, one on the left and one on the right, both are same size, though it's possible that 8850 has an additional 3rd smaller fan for the GPU from the picture.

Oh... Nvm, you meant GPU fan, I was talking about total number of fans for the notebook.

I'm not shelling out the money for a new laptop... but if I was I would be enticed to pay a little extra for the additional cooling the 9285 provides, considering I would be buying it for the 480m.

However, like I mentioned before, the 8850's keyboard appears less cramped.

    Edit: For comparison of keyboards

The NP8850 has 2 fans, 1 for the cpu, 1 for the GTX480, The NP9285 has 3 fans, 2 for the CPU/chipset and one for the GTX480.
