Another major difference in heat and power demands is that the 9280/9285 uses desktop CPU verses 8850 mobile CPU.
My prediction is Clevo will use the 8850 (W880CU) as a replacement of the 8760 (W870CU) model and offer more choices to the graphic cards on the 8850 model. On the surface, it makes perfect sense to stay competitive in the marketplace.
Why? Simple. The competition is not standing still. Newer models from competitors have at least one USB 3.0 port. I do not see people spending thousands of dollars to buy "yesterdays" technology when other brands are offering newer technology.
Can anyone confirm if the 8850 uses the Sentilic touchpads (tap-to-scroll) with the Synaptics touchpads to allow finger-slide scrolling?

See post #36 and #34. -
Thanks. I understand that the Sagar told the resellers that the 8850 would not replace the 8760.
I had read those posts before my speculation about Clevo using the 8850 as a replacement of the 8760 in order to stay on par with their competitors.
At minimum Clevo will need to refresh the 8760 to stay competitive. Maybe 8765.
I just hope the 8850 uses the Synaptics touchpads. I am looking forward to the reviews from NBR members on this model. -
To stay competitive against who? 5870 is still the top dawg I think. Once we see some real performance numbers on the 480m..for all we know the 8760 is just as fast as the 8850?
-
My posts are about USB 3.0 ports and the low-end touchpad used on the 8760. For laptops costing thousands of dollars, why would you want to buy a new laptop without USB 3.0 or using a touchpad that belongs on a budget laptop?
-
yup, heres the first full review. 480 is something like 7% faster than a stock 5870. Most 5870s can oc 20-30% thus beating out the more expensive 480. That said, maybe the 4870 will OC 10-20% and take the lead? Still, a bit disappointing.

When all is said and done I think the 480m will do better than what we are seeing in this review. Let's get this card into the hands of someone here on the forum who will REALLY test it...
-
Just saw these myself. Very interesting. Maybe drivers need more maturity? I guess I'm not so bummed that the 480m won't work with the 8760 any more.
What I'd like to see is a 5870m oc'd to about 800/1100...I've tested street fighter 4 and I usually get about a 10 fps average gain.Temps stay cool too.
Lol, you are just saying this because you want to sell them.
-
I'm at 880/1080, one other thing all the benchmarks for the 480 so far are with high end desktop I7s.....and still not a huge difference......some guy here is going to pair a 5870 with the same CPU and see what the results yield.
-
Why would the cpu even matter, isn't the gpu the bottleneck in any case?
-
um no..not really, with a desktop CPU your obviously going to see better numbers all around, not to mention alot of the current games are CPU hogs like bc2
-
I am having a huge crisis deciding between the 8850 and the 9280
I am asking myself do I really want to sacrifice a vertical rez from 1200 to 1080?
The 8850 has a 16x9 format compared to 16x10 on the 9280.
Also I hear that the 9280 screen has less pop and looks worse then glossed screens, and even worse then some non gloss screens.
Plus the 9280 has a bad blue shift that must be corrected via nvidia control panel....even afterwards it still does not look perfect.
If I wanted to watch a 16x9 movie on the 9280 with the rez set at 1920x1200 in windows,
I would have black bars on top and bottom unless I 'stretched' the picture which causes poorer quality. If I set the rez to 1920x1080 in windows, my image would look processed, cuz now your using a non native format for that screen.
Dunno, in the end I am moving toward the 8850 simply because it has a better looking screen instead of a higher rez screen.
Thoughts? -
Jason from PCTorque has a post on another forum that the 9280/9285 will be discontinued in about a month. So if you want a 9280/9285, buy now.
-
So has anyone received their w880 yet?
-
Looks like the machine ships on 6/28....

Clevo has released the drivers on the site...
CLEVO W880CU-Sager NP8850 Download -
So Hemi are you getting one of these to test ? Or are you going to buy one outright since the X7200 is still aways off ?...
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Yeah I should have one in a couple of days I believe. I will make a direct comparison to the 5870 at least in Vantage and in temps. -
Please, overclock.
Just set it to 600/1200/800 straightaway, and see if it sticks. -
Sounds good man, i will certainly be looking forward to your results...
-
Why only vantage? Why not in games? I don't think Vantage is exactly a good way to compare.
Shouldn't you just get a w870cu and save $900? It's the same as the 8850 in terms of performance from what we have seen. -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
I may do a game benchmark or two...

No longer pre-order...the mighty Sager NP8850 has now begun shipping

I am curious,
You mentioned this comes with USB 3.0. Great bonus!
However, my external drives are eSata and currently running and Express Card with two eSata ports.
My question is, does the eSata input on the 8850 support Port Multiplying so I can get rid of this Express Card?
Currently running a 5-bay External Case in Raid 5 format. (Built in Hardware for the Raid computing). But it requires the motherboard input (or an express card) to have Port Mulitplying.
I am seriously thinking of selling my Asus G60 and getting the 8850. It's nice. (hoever, I do like the keyboard layout o the Asus better. But I'd be willing to sacrifice that for sound (which mine no longer has through external speakers, I tripped on the headphone cord and tweaked the speaker jack), better Resolution, and all out speed and graphics. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Sadly, none of the Sager models support Port Multiplying.
-
well, that just sucks.
That was another qustion if it did, i prolly would opt out for the 9280, but, since I have to have the expess card then, getting the 9280 would just be stupid.
I mean really, what were you thinking here Clevo/Sager?
'Oh! Let's put the xpress card slot above the Optical drive so that it forces people to disconnect and remove their express card to place a dvd in the drive.!'
that kinda sucks. Plus, the9280 just looks really bulky in design.

Are there any pics of the chunkier bottom yet ?... Id like to see how they beefed up the cooling ....
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Hopefully tomorrow I will have some decent pics of it...but what about these heatsinks of the W880CU? ...to be continued...soon!
See page before...Now the bottom cover removed! Lots of stuff under the "hood"! ...to be continued...soon!
Bottom looks not too different...to be continued...soon! -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is nothing new in any of these pics. What you are seeing is the legacy M570TU GPU heatsink for the GTX 280M, and the W870CU with the GPU heatsink installed with a GTX 285M underneath it. The serial number is a dead giveaway. The more subtle giveaways are the positioning of the GTX 285M's bucks and chokes underneath the W870CU's heatsink. The GTX 480M's are not located in the same position, and will reflect the change in the yet to be seen heatsink. -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
That is M570TU? I will recheck those sources. Sure didn't look like it to me since they are showing the 480m all through that article...I will know today or tomorrow about this. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I forgot one more giveaway. The two wings on the M570TU's heatsink are meant to make contact with the memory chips. On the M570TU, the GPU connector is, by y-axis, on the bottom of the motherboard whereas on the W870CU and the W880CU the connector is on the top. Of course, a GTX 285M on the W870CU is facing the other way, and thus the memory is on the left and bottom side of the GPU core while on an M570TU's GTX 280M they are on the right and top side.
I don't care what source it is. The fact still stands that the images still show an M570TU heatsink and a typical W870CU, regardless of how much GTX 480M is mentioned. -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
You mean to tell me there is misinformation on the internet...
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes, I am telling you that there is misinformation on the internet. This is one of those instances as the pics have absolutely nothing to do with the GTX 480M. I've fondled the M570TU and W870CU GPU heatsink more than anyone in this forum. I know.
One more giveaway. The motherboard revision on that W870CU is V4.0, the original production run of the W870CU before the Arrandales were supported in the succeeding motherboard revision. -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Yes I know you have extensive M570TU experience. I am removing those pics now. Thanks. -

i noticed there is an extra curve out on the center fan

That is a beauty... Nice pics justin thanks...
So has anything else changed on the machine like the Battery etc ? Also what size PSU are these machines shipping with ?... -
Questions for those that have their hands-on the 8850, is the 8850 using the Sentilic touchpads (tap-to-scroll) with the Synaptics touchpads to allow finger-slide scrolling?
Is the speaker volume/clarity improved on the 8850 over the 8760? -
Just madness! requires even the help of cpu fan to cool that 100W GTX480M beast! thanks for the pics, and more pics please! just cant get enough

Wow, that's some crazy cooling design!
Now, I'd really like to know the temps. -
That new cooling system is slick... Thanks for all the pics both of you...
-
What does it write on the GDDR? I am curious about the timings.
-
So did anyone get this machine yet and are willing to post some impressions ?
...
-
I sold my 870CU and was planning on getting the new 15" Asus but it looks like they will have crappy GPU's in them so I will probably be picking up the 8850 soon. I was kind of holding off to see some benchmarks and heat impressions first though.
-
Yeah i am anxious to hear about the temps and benches from a real owner
...
-
Where does secondary hard drive go though? I dont see any where else to place it unless its under the first one..?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
I don't know about you guys, but I'm hot on my seat on that backpanel. My fans will love the raised rear, and I will have more space for more modding. I'll be the first in line to pick one up for my W870CU once surplus units become available a few weeks after the W880CU launches.
