This thing is ridiculously loud when games are running. Like I can barely hear the notebook speakers over the fan even though they are above 50%. Sooooo annoying :(

Even on regular use without silent mode the fans are always running and not running quietly either.

Is there some way to keep silent mode on always as a default?

The metal plate thats on the fan, play around with the size of it, i think if you shave a mm or two around the circumfernce, you wont lose much cooling power, and it wont be as loud, i dont think.

I don't have a problem with the noise of thise laptop, for the amount of power its got in it i think its brilliant. The fan is loud when running at max speed but the speakers are DEFINATELY far louder, i've been really impressed with the quality of the speakers in this laptop and especially the volume that they'll reach! Its only when i leave a game that i notice just how loud the fan was, but as said i can't hear it while in a game.

Are you serious? I'm no audiophile, but I think the speakers are TERRIBLE; I always use headphones.

Anyway, as a gaming laptop, you can't possibly expect this thing to be quiet. Personally, I use silent mode whenever I'm not gaming, and I have no problems with that. It's not too much to ask to just press the silent mode button when you start the computer.

My Toshiba was a lot louder doing a lot of nothing. This machine is quiet for the power it puts out.
You want to hear loud, buy the 5976.

Yeah, unless im missing something, the sound output isnt all that great. Sounds good, but 90% i need head phones just to be able to hear.

Yeah the speakers aren't the greatest, but as far as the fan goes my Inspiron 6000 was louder than this thing.

    ...Volume =/= quality people.

This thing is plenty loud, but what's actually coming out of it sounds like crap.

Crap? You mean distortion or crackling? I had that, until I updated the Realtek audio drivers. Now my speakers are nice and clear, even when maxed.

Jesus Christ, bad sound is bad news for me. Might be the deal breaker..

The sound of the Gateway p6831fx is/was terrible too (I got used to it now though).

I doubt anyone has both the 860TU and the p6831fx to compare the sound quality.

I haven't heard a laptop that sounds 'good.' No distortion, just clear, bad ( or just not so good ) sound.

I use a good set of headphones whenever I need to watch a video or play a game.

My NP9262 is decent, and somewhat loud, but no where near close enough to put away my headphones hehe.

My M570RU has one Realtek onboard sound ALC883 chipset. It´s not fantastic(95dB SNR), there is always some processing EMI noise, but it has clear vivid sound.

Because of the M570RU´s out jack problem, I bought one X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook about a week ago.

Good SNR(104dB), no processing noises, the most noticeable diference was the deeper bass level. But the overall sound quality, on both XP and Vista was far from good even on 24bits 96kHz, the higher freq sounds sounded like muffled, unclear and sometimes with distorsion, on both my Sony headphones and Cambridge speakers, even on multiple X-Fi Crystalizer and CMSS 3D configurations.

Today I´ve returned it. Now I have ordered one E-MU 0202 USB, 113dB SNR :)D) will clear any doubts.

Haha, believe me, there is, bcoz I have one :)
The MSI M1719 has a 4.1 speaker setup and it sounds great!

The speakers of the Gateway p6831fx are just 2 steps down. Im speculating that the sound on the 860TU is on that level too :(
Just good enough for gaming, but clearly lacking in music and movies.

How do you get the sound louder??? Ive got the realtek drivers, and alot of times every thing sounds awesome. But mainly when im watching movies, ill turn everything up, and i will barely be able to hear anything.

Is there a trick to it??

Try the settings Carpeted Hallway in environment and Soft in equalizer and see how it goes. If soft doesn't do it for you, try Rock.

I didn't mean distorted sound, or crackling sound, I mean flat, cheap sound from small drivers from probably 10 watt speakers.

I use headphones for playing games and things like that but for listening to music if you don't want to wear headphones the speakers on this thing are fine. Its a laptop the speakers will never be really good what i'm saying is from what i've heard from other laptops these ones are good compared to other laptops.

Try checking or unchecking Loudness Equalization in the Realtek CP.

Sure, I will do that... but with E-MU Tracker Pre USB.

Yesterday Creative contacted me saing that E-MU 0202 was out of stock but E-MU Tracker Pre was available... it uses the same DACs and ADCs but with micro phantom support and better SNR over headphones(108dB VS 112dB). The price diference is not much... I will decide tomorow. :p

    ;)

I don't even see the need for a silent mode button. They just should have created it so the fan only comes on when either the CPU/GPU reach a certain temperature. My CPU is under 40C and the GPU is under 45C and the fan is constantly on thats just annoying. CPU fan should only come on at 60C at least.

    Bad choice by Clevo TBH.

The laptop is still young. Firmware and bios updates will be made. You guys are acting like Clevo is going to abandon their first powerhouse 15 inch :)

He's right. Fans should start and stop automatically at certain temperatures.
If Clevo plans to fix this with a bios update, they should do it fast, because this technology is nothing new.

More bad news popping up here and there about this laptop.
