Or should I start saving for a new 'puter?
Getting a new/used 6990m seems a little silly considering the price, and upgrading is... pretty expensive as well.
Before my graphics card crapped out on me(11 days after my warranty expired) everything else worked just fine, but I'm unsure if it's worth investing more.

You should check into baking the GPU. Many people have reported luck on the 6990M. But don't expect it to last too long after doing so, its more of a temporary solution until you get a new computer or replacement GPU.

Given the failure rate of the 6990M, your best option is to shoot for the baking method. If that fails, you will probably be better off getting a newer system with a GPU considered more reliable.

Will it work in such an old system? If it was an Ivy bridge system, it should work but Sandy Bridge might be tricky...

Oh right, I forgot I came in right around the big change. I'm edging toward just building a cheap gaming PC and getting a decent general use laptop instead. It'll be bake or break, I suppose.

I feel for you... right now im kinda busy with a system freeze/lockup issue (with looping sound), which may or may not be related to having the paging file disabled OR (god forbid) some hardware failure.
Well, good luck for both of us. -

I have found comrades
My 6990m died as well now im just lm lookin for a replacement for it any suggestions?
Tho might as well buy a cheap laptop now that i build a desktop -
I start to get the feeling that there is a timer inside which just fries those cards after a year or two of usage....would make for a fine conspiracy thriller movie. With a lot of truth in it.

do not question
theyll set the time to 6 months if they think anyones about to reveal the truth -
Funny mine seems to have crapped out on Dec 7th which is exactly 3 years since I bought it.
The odd thing is I am able to get into windows fine by using safe mode to remove all do the ATI drivers. Then I am able to boot into windows using the windows standard vga adapter driver however the screen resolution only maxes out at 1140x1050 so everything is stretched. I don't use it for gaming any more as I have a desktop for that but I'd like to still use it for development, browsing, file serving of possible.
The HDMI port died on it around a year ago and I'd thought about adding a USB3 video adapter to use it for watching movies to the TV that way via XBMC. I wonder if that is still possible now?

Oh no! My 6990m is dead! Worthwhile to replace/upgrade in a 3 year old laptop?
