I've read conflicting reports about whether this laptop can take 8GB RAM.

    Currently, it has 2 x 2GB of OCZ PC3-10700H (667 MHz) - according to CPU-Z.

    Could I swap these out for generic 2 x 4GB of PC3-8500 1066MHz?

I am running the latest version of the bios which as far as I know are: 1.02.17 and KB 1.00.13

The Service manual states the M860TU only supports 4GB in total. But the PM45 chipset does support 8GB.

Here's an old review that also states 8GB was option.

    Thanks!

Now just the question of if I could use 2 x 4GB of PC3-8500 1066MHz?

If already have the memory, just put it in and see. The review did test with memory of that spec.

I believe the chipset only supports PC3-8500 speeds anyway.

It should work. My M570TU works with 8 GB fine, doesn't work with more though.

Yes the chipset does not support beyond that.
