    Sager 8298/Clevo p177sm-a from xotic:

    4810MQ
    8GB
    GTX 880m
    Intel wifi
1TB sata 2 (going to save up for 1.5 or 2TB sata 3 drives and swap in my 240GB intel msata for OS)

Nothing much else special about it and had to skimp on a few things to make it work now instead of a week or two, but I need a stable work/gaming rig like 3 months ago so no complaints here. Plan on getting either HGST 1.5TB drives or looking into the slim USB 3 portable that have been cracked open to get 2TB 9.5MM and one day Id love to get 480GB + msata but thats a pipe dream for now. Other Im excited for a fast delivery since there really wasnt much configuration. Cant wait! All in all Im impressed with the reviews and for what I ordered and much less then $2000 (and even the price of my alienware 14) makes me even happier! Hope this computer works well for the next 3+ years.

    Very nice...
Out of curiosity how would you rate it against your alienware m14?

Do post your experiences once in your hands :)

Ill try and remember to do so. The alienware 14 is an amazing laptop and once was the the pinnacle of laptops for me until I found out I needed more HDD space that it could offer. Still a little nervous of the unkown since I have never seen or touched a Clevo/sager but im sure ill be happy like many others.

Congrats! I've got a P170SM-AS on the way (NP8278-S) as well. We will have to do some benchmarks to see the real world difference between the 870m and 880m when we get them ;)

I spent my video card upgrade money on ram, ssd, a larger HD, and extending the warranty. Most problems I've had with laptops have been within the 1 to 2 year range, so I wanted to make sure I had at least that, since I'll be using mine for work.

Nice! Grats! Im going to get a 3 year not too long from now as I hear 90 days from ship you can upgrade it. Ill be slowly doing storage and ram which is all I have left to do. Im pretty sure the benchmarks will be close as the 870m is no slouch!

Correct you can add it up to 90days from the day it shipped out. If you happen to wait til very last minute, keep in mind you usually get the tracking number the day after it shipped. So go by the date the tracking says, not the day you get the shipped notification.

Good to know! Will probaby not wait too long to get a better warranty.

Lol I ordered yeasterday and im getting impatient. Did you do any customization? I only did 4810mq, gtx 880m and spare psu with no OS so im hoping mine ships fast. In desperate need of a stable workstation.

    Your m4600 isn't stable?

Edit: never mind watched your alienware video. That sucks! I can't believe they didn't do anything to fix it.

The m4600 isnt stable with my work setup, as well as it isnt up to snuff to gaming. The alienware has been a mixed bag, but as of now is fixed and awaiting a keyboard. The alienware is pretty much brand new as everything has been replaced at least once. The videos on my youtube channel do show the m4600 (the multimonitor video) and the issues I have with it. But if I use it solo it runs OK just low on graphic power. Sadly I cant do my job without the monitor setup I have and thus I need a new workstation. Hoping the m4600 will serve well as a server.

Just checked the site and phase 1! So excited!

Yeah the 4810MQ for $35 was a no brainer. Best bang for your buck CPU when full price, let alone $35. Im on day 3 of phase 1 hopefully the rush I paid for helps as the last 3 days of work have been crash-tastic.

I just ordered mine yesterday. An np7378 and about the only thing I did to it was increase the memory to 24GB, upgrade to 4810MQ and get an extra battery. I went to phase 1 earlier today. I am hoping it does not take too long since there is nothing that needs to be shipped to Xotic first. I will get windows 8.1 pro from microsoft and install another drive I have and put ubuntu on the

That laptop is going to make it so much easier to do MATLAB and GPGPU stuff with. Running games on it should be pretty nice also.

Haha well I dont know you but i have you beat in the patience category. Not only did I not pay for the rush, but Im in CA, sager is less then a two hour drive from me. The reason I went through xotic was because for whatever reason they werent charging tax while sager was. Well, it turns out xotic is saving me the tax by having sager build the thing here in socal, then ship to xotic in nebreska, xotic then ships it right to me. So im betting youll have yours before I have mine.

Since we're in Nebraska we only collect sales tax when shipping in state. It will add some time to your shipping but save you a few bucks by doing so.

Instead of starting a "Shipped!" thread, I'll just hijack yours to say: my P170 shipped today!! Woohoo! the notepal u3 cooler already arrived. Now all I have to do is load up an OS when she shows up.

Congrats! I cant wait for mine since I added rush production plus between the alienware being sold son and the precision having multi-monitor/dock issues im ready for my sager to arrive.

Mine is still sitting on phase one also but at least it does not have to go to Xotic after it is built so that should cut down the total time. Once it arrives though I will post some MATLAB performance comparisons in case anyone cares about those.

The build update often skips straight to 3 and/or often to 4. The build estimates seem to be pretty accurate though with the occasional mishap or delay in shipping missing the expected date by a day or two. From my personal experience and what I've seen from others experience throughout the years.

Ouch. My order with prostar went through on Monday. I did standard, no rush. So it shipped yesterday, and will be here Wednesday. I guess that is one of the benefits of them assembling theirs in house... I had some modifications too (IC thermal compound and additional copper heatsinks).

I was on the fence between Prostar, Xotic and lpc digital. I'll do a review on them once I get my machine, but basically XoticPC never got back to me with pricing questions (they replied to my emails over a couple day period, but never actually gave me any real info). LPC and Prostar were very responsive, but in the end I figured I'd be better served with a shop that has a faster turn around time (builds and does their work in house). Truth be told, everyone was nearly the same price, give or take a few bucks...so I went with the company I had the most positive interaction with.

Xotic doesnt actually perform the build, sager does. They are more of a vendor who sometimes will do custom work for you.

I went with Xotic because they have a good reputation and because one of them helped me on the forums with some questions. It seems that all the companies that sell Sager laptops are within a few dollars of each other.

You will find Sager resellers should all have the same price when it comes to hardware because Sager actually sets the pricing. We all have to agree to go by their prices so we're not all trying to beat each other or even Sager directly.

LOL I had this happen a few times just not so drastic. I had a few packages ship from 6-7 hours south of me to 4-5 hours north of me then to 2 hours west/NW of me and then finally arrived at my door.

Yeah Id love to have gotten the 4910 but Ill save that for upgrade latter and might grab the extreme 4930 in a few years to "refresh the machine".

You're going to absolutely love it.

And I'd not overly worry about the keyboard. I type 160 wpm and I don't mistype or typo (other than fat-fingering it) and I certainly don't notice any dropped keys.

There may be ghosting issues, but frankly I've not ran across it yet.

So it's either in different hardware, or they fixed it.

    As for quality.

My previous gaming rig was an Asus G51 JX-X1 laptop. At the time one of the cream of the crops.

This one in build quality blows it away.

I've played with alienwares before, but frankly today they're nothing more than bling. A friends had an alienware and digging around in it while the quality was, ok... I don't think it compares to the clevo brand. It just isn't there.

Aluminum cases are all great and dandy, but it's the parts inside that really count more.

Mine seems strange. It is still on Phase 1 since the second. I didn't do the rush delivery it just seems to be taking a long time to get the parts together. NP7378
They can still easily make the total time it should take I just found it kind of strange.

Very good to hear! Alienware does charge a premium, and up until this 14 I was always happy with them. But now my closet dream of owning a sager is going to come true and Im very excited.

Before I bought the alienware 14 last september my last "gaming" computer was an alienware m11x original. So it will be nice to game on a gaming card once again and not workstation cards.

Well phase 1 takes 7-12 business days and thats if they have access to the parts needed. So if you ordered on the 2nd the 11th is the soonest you should see a phase change, and thats not factoring in phase 0 being ~24hours. I ordered mine on the 30th and added rush build and mine shipped on the 8th.

Phase 1 is the longest of them. As davefromca mentioned it probably is waiting for its turned to get worked on. Once you get the Phase 2 update you'll get the rest of them up to shipped within a few days.

Thanks that is nice to know. I just thought it was a little strange since I thought testing would take longer than putting it together. At least it can just ship straight to me once it is done so that part is nice.

Definitely looking forward to getting the laptop and seeing how MATLAB runs on it. :)

Well, I picked my P170SM-AS up from UPS today. They were supposed to deliver it yesterday, but they came 10 minutes before I got home... grr. So I just picked it up to make it easy.

Windows 8 pro loaded in a snap. Still loading drivers, but man, I like it so far! It feels very well made at first impression. I like the keyboard too! Not too loud, but definitely has a positive key-press action. And am I missing something? From all the folks complaining about the touchpad, I was expecting something awful. I actually really like it... maybe I'm weird. I wish the fingerprint scanner wasn't there between the buttons, but that is no biggie.

Been running it for a few hours while I've been installing drivers and multitasking on my other computer, and the fans haven't even kicked on. All I have heard is the DVD-ROM when I'm accessing the dvd the software came on. I turned the fan speed to maximum to see how loud it is.... uhh, not bad at all. It would be fine for gaming.

For whatever reason, the wireless drivers don't want to install though... not sure what the deal is. I'm going to have to go plug it into the router to see if I can update the drivers. Ugh, so lazy. lol

I installed win 8 to the SSD, and holy cow does it reboot fast. I counted something like 3.5 seconds to the login screen.

EDIT: For whatever reason, the AC 7260 drivers from the CD didn't work in Windows 8. I grabbed them off the intel site and they worked just dandy. Now I just have a gig of windows updates....oh joy.

The thing runs twice as fast compared to when it was new! Glad I ordered one with my new rig. And ya i feel you on the windows updates...

There's also settings you can open from the mouse->touchpad settings to tweak and customize the touchpad so it actually is enjoyable to use. Increase the pointer speed and decrease the pages per scroll and it'll mimic most other touchpads you're used to.

I also disabled the pinch-to-zoom and the push-to-expand gestures. I found them too easy to activate using two finger scrolling.

    I know, right?

When I got my 8258-S, I was expecting jet-engine sounding fans, but they're not loud at all.

Granted, they are noticeable when you kick them on maximum, but I still wouldn't consider them loud.
