Decided to upgrade my current laptop, Clevo P170EM 3740QM 7970m 16gb ram (still under warrenty from PCSpecialist)

ordered myself a new laptop from Schenker as pc specialist couldnt meet my needs for a new laptop, even the manager said no to me!

so from schenker ive ordered this:

    Display

    1 x 17.3" (43.9cm) Full-HD 1920x1080 Matte £0.00

(getting a free upgrade to a LG/Phillips / Glossy HD panel :) for paying £12 extra DHL postage to have laptop sent to the schenker UK base to have the panel fitted :) )

    Graphics Card

    1 x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M 8192MB GDDR5 + NVIDIA F2P Bundle + Watch_Dogs™ £186.67
    GPU-GTX-880M-BUNDLE

PCSpecialist wouldnt do me a single GTX880 in a dual GPU laptop :( my idea is to have the option of upgrade some day

    Processor

    1 x Intel Core i7-4810MQ Quad Core - 2.80 - 3.80GHz 6MB 47W £65.00
    KCI-4810MQ

    Thermal Compound

    1 x Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound £0.00

    Memory

    1 x 32GB (4x8192) SO-DIMM DDR3 RAM 1600MHz Crucial Ballistix Sport (only with Quadcore-CPU) £220.00
    KR3-4x8GB-1600-CRUCIAL-BALLISTIX

    Hard Drive

1 x No Hard Drive - An OS cannot be chosen with this option unless an mSATA drive is selected. £0.00
    APHDD2NOHDD
    Hard Drive 2

1 x No Hard Drive - An OS cannot be chosen with this option unless a hard drive is selected. £0.00

Fitting intel SSD 480GB from my current machine + 1TB 7200 2.5" drive

    Optical Drive

    1 x Blu-ray Burner/DVD-RW - without Software £36.67

    WIFI Card

    1 x Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 (with Bluetooth) £19.17

What do you think? is this a good laptop? descent spec? i think the price i got it at wasnt bad.

And idea the best place to try and sell my P170EM machine?

    Cheers, Rob

    Hi

I understand that Jack was in touch with you today to let you know that your laptop was shipped from our UK office after having the panel swapped for a glossy model, so you should receive it on Monday! Having the option to add a second 880M leaves you with a good upgrade path. In most demanding titles (with your current spec) you'll see a minimum 35% performance increase over your 7970M, so definitely a nice jump in performance!

I think he said that because a new refresh is coming in a few months, and your current laptop is still very capable.

Not so much a refresh but a proper new generation that happens every 3 years or so.

ahhh damn, well i guess you know more than me :( spent ages searching for information like that before buying but could find nothing, only seems like its going to be ages till a new generation of mobile GPUs come, and either way the model ive ordered is only a few months old so id hope it will be compatible.

I can only be in so many places at once I suppose. ;)

This is THE place to ask about up and coming tech along with modding opertunities. The last couple of generations of system have not run later cards but that is not set in stone.

    Haha true!

yeah i dont know why i didnt come here first, all i did was browse other peoples posts about the p370sm-a but didn't ask my own questions ¬.¬
Although ill just keep my hopes high and hope the p370sm-a is a beast, infact if the next gen of nvidea mobile gpus are maxwell, arent some of the lower end 800m series cards based on a maxwell core already? and if thats true then surely the p370sm-a will compatible with the architecture.
so i think ill bite the bullet and keep it when it arrives on monday, i just know when i have it in my hands it will be too tempting either way.

rothomson - I'm sure that when your XMG P724 arrives you will be more than happy with it :) GPUs are refreshed at least once a year but giving details of this is always going to be difficult.

Meaker - our sales rep actually discussed upgrading GPUs before rothomson placed his order via email and Live Chat, it was clearly explained that we could only guarantee that the currently available GPUs would be compatible with the P724 chassis. As you are aware, companies are not allowed to post details or allude to upcoming technology launches due to NDA terms.

Ahh i understand, if NDA terms are there and exist, then im guessing any information out there about the subject is just speculation. ill live in hope that ive made the right decision here haha. hopefully customers of the latest model of laptop such as this wont be forgotton about so quickly when it comes to bios updates etc lol

When new GPUs are launched, it doesn't always co-incide with brand new chassis but even if it does we won't forget customer with current gen hardware;-)

I'm sure there is no need for you to appologise, at the end of the day hardware updates happen so frequently and new models are released that it's always difficult to know what's happening. There are discussions which do tend to have accurate information, but we resellers are always in a difficult position.

Got this laptop at lunchtime and its brilliant! have to say the speakers sound great for a laptop.
had a bit of trouble dropping my hard drives into it with my previous installation of windows. got it sorted with a system restore and a registry clean.
Gaming performance seems great, and its not too loud at all! temps seem good aswel
Whats the best way to see if my graphics card is throttling?
Watch dogs running on ultra settings with temporal TXAA at 38-48fps (just using fraps)
Very nice build quality and so glad i got the glossy display :D looks very nice
