    So I ordered a np8258, specs
    I7 4810
    16gb ram
    880 8gb
120gb samsung Evo msata ssd boot drive
    1tb 7200rpm
    Intel ac7260

How often will I need to reapply thermal paste? How often will I need to clean the fans...? Other than in 2 years or so switching the main drive with an ssd is their anything else you would recommend to make the computer last long?
    Thanks

You should only reapply your thermal paste, only when the temperature is rising more than usual even after cleaning all the vents. there is no set time frame, but once it is applied properly, I don't think you need to worry about it drying out in 3-4 years time. cleaning the vent, depends on the environment you are using your laptop, if you are using it in a smoke filled environment, dusty place, or has pets which leaves furs everywhere, you will need to clean the fan and vents more frequently, than in a clean and dust free environment. once you received your laptop, run some bench marks to see if it's performing as it should and the temperature with in its normal (check the forums) boundaries, when gaming make sure you aren't covering the underside vents, or better use a laptop cooler to keep the internals less toasty. good luck!

If you use a high quality paste when doing it you should be able to avoid ever doing it again.

Cleaning the vents and fans at least once every six months is a good rule of thumb. As DragonMan mentioned you may need to do it more often depending on your environment.

Thermal paste = Not for years if a good quality paste is used. Some users are able to use the laptop without ever needing to reapply the compound until their next purchase. Watch your temps, as they are an indicator as to whether the paste is degrading or not.

Cleaning = subjective to extent of use and environment. You should take a look at them every 6 months, maybe earlier if you're a heavy user and/or are in a dusty or pet friendly environment.

Your specs look pretty good, so I don't think there are any immediate upgrades you should consider. Just take care of it physically as those components can generate a lot of heat! Keeping the temps down and the laptop free from shock, liquid, or any other accidental damage, will help it last as long as it can. =)

This is especially true if you have pets. A fluffy cat comes to mind.

You should see some of the hair balls we've found when people have sent in the computers.

Paste that lasts for years?! Man I'm either applying paste wrong or using the wrong paste. MX-4 tanks after just 30 hours of gaming, +3C to both GPUs. Honestly I'll be happy if this ShinEtsu paste I applied can last for 3 months lol

Regarding cleaning, I do it once every month because I'm OCD, but also if I'm gaming a lot that particular month (say 20 hours/week), enough dust accumulates after a month that I see a 2-3C increase in temps.

Everybody has a different environment/climate that will require cleaning at different rates.
