Ok so ive got a new system (in sig) last week and the 13.3 drivers have it playing lovely on all the latest games. Can play all on max barring Crysis 3, toned down ever so slightly to get 45FPS.

Now I see a lot of you guys OC'ing your current 7970M cards and have to think whats the point if all these games are running at a great FPS and playable. Dont you risk the life of your cards??

I can see the point if your trying to get that nice little kick for some FPS but if you dont need it as the games are running fine whats the point? Is it a "flex" thing :p or does it help get anything else out a game im missing?

I was thinking about oc'ing my card but i thought why run the risk when i dont actually need to. Not a debate, more of a query as its kinda new to me :D

It's really up to personal preference. Some people do it for the sport and some do it for the performance. I'm of the same opinion as you are where if you don't need to then why do it but I've used the saying that people tend to use for mountain climbing. "Why do you do it? Because it's there."

Haha, couldn't have put it better myself. I never condone nor decry it, and OC'ing unlocks potential not only for increased performance, but also for instability.

The other option is to order a factory overclocked edition.

I push my machine just to test its limits. Then I usually OC for best balance of performance/heat/power. I don't see any reason though with the 680m why anyone wouldn't at least use the "approved" limit of +135MHz on the core, and crank the vRAM up to at least 2200MHz. It's pretty much a free boost that's 99.9% guaranteed to work with any card. Right now I'm running at 900MHz core, stock voltage, and 2200MHz vRAM and temps are still nice and cool.
