Hey guys I'm looking to overclock my 7970m but I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to overclocking so wanted to get a few things clear first:

    1. Is 950 on the core and 1400 on the memory safe for every day gaming clocks?
    2. Is it a good idea to adjust the fan speeds at all, I know people do it on desktops all the time but I'm not sure if it's as easy on a laptop?
    3. Does simply turning the clock speeds up take more juice from the power supply or is that only when you start over-volting? I currently have a 3720qm overclocked to 3.8Ghz and I believe it has a tdp of 60w and I'm wondering how much headroom I've got

Thanks for any help in advance

For stability testing, just run some intensive 3D program in a loop. There are plenty out there. If it's stable after half dozen hours, good to go.

950 core is fine, but I think most of us run memory around 1300-1375. Some do higher, but I don't find there is reason to, no increase in games for me.

As for power, should be fine. Believe your system is specced to handle 100 watt gpu and 7970m probably closer to 75watt.

did u set a higher max. tdp for ur cpu via xtu? if not it should still be at the standard values of 45/55w long/short term tdp. u should be fine as long as u dont see any sudden shutdowns of ur machine, that would indicate ur psu giving out ;)

as zymphad already mentioned, u can just test ur clocks for stability using games, benchmarks and torture tools like msi kombustor.

as for fan tables, unfortunately u cannot adjust those on clevos. only option we have is checking different EC versions to see which one fits our needs best.

My CPU is set to 60w when at 3.8Ghz so it's taking more than usual, that's why I was wondering if simply overclocking the gpu would take more juice or whether it was just over-volting that takes more power, Ive tested my clocks and they're all fine, I test temps and clocks fairly regularly as I change drivers a lot, thanks for the help so far guys, the info's been helpful

You get a linear increase in power consumption from clocks and an exponential increase in power from voltage.

^ Ah thanks, I read somewhere that the 7970m has a 100w tdp and with the 60w cpu I probably have about 20w left in the bank so I could probably mess around with overclocking a bit but not over-volting aswell
