Hi everybody!
First off, sorry if this is thread is unnecessary or in the wrong place, I couldn't find any thread on the 6990m with the search functions for whatever reason. Could be cuz I'm new to this.
I used to have a P-151hm with a 2630qm 8 gigs ram that I upgraded with a 6970m and the 180w PSU. This worked great for a while but died on me in the past weeks.
I decided maybe upgrading was not the best idea and went with the 8150 with a 6990m, 2760qm, and 8gigs of ram. Upgrade all around with better card and better CPU.
Overclocked on the 8130 I could get max 13560 gpu on Vantage with 870/1050 (I believe) which is pretty good and worked amazingly for games. Battlefield 3 on ultra with 2x AA ran at 36-45 FPS on average and I was really happy with it.
The new 8150 with the 6990m scores 15103 gpu on Vantage overclocked to 795/1035 (highest I can go with stability, temps running at max temp 76 under load in games so plenty safe).
The problem I have is it seems to have worse fps on most games than my old laptop... Battlefield 3 on ultra NO AA gets me 33-45 on overclock and I feel it should be higher. It's a Clevo card and stock clocks are in the regular range. I find it strange my old card, which does worse in benchmarking with a worse CPU with the same drivers, does better in gaming. I've tried playing with the CCC with tes off and other settings but it doesn't seem to make gameplay any better. Changing drivers doesn't seem to help (on 12.1 previews atm)
All the power settings (hotkey, CCC, and Windows) are set to performance.
Another weird thing is the 6990m clocks weren't stable at 795/1000 but when I bumped it up to 795/1035 it worked great? Is this cause for concern?? This whole thing confuses me and I've kinda run out of ideas!! Any help would be great guys.

For the gaming performance, the best I guess I have is that it's driver related. The 6990 just might not be optimized as well in software as the 6970 (which has been out longer and has more stable drivers). Have you tried more than one game for a comparison? The benchmarks seem to bear out that the card is functioning as intended as far as raw performance.

Yea I've tried with batman, Crysis 2, and Crysis Warhead. Same problems.

seems like the 6990M in the p170hm could be OCed higher than that in the p150hm...my max stable clocks while gaming (BF3) are 800/1000 but somehow there's no problem running the 3Dmark11 at 825/1090.
-
strange... I know I can run furmark at higher clocks with no issues but once I try to use those clocks with 3dmark 11 or any games it stops right quick.

Hey guys,
So I ran GPU-Z and 3dmark 11 and noticed something strange,
Whenever I see people's 3dmark 11 info it shows their core and memory clock for the 6990m at the stock clocks or their OC values. Mine just show 100/150... Same goes for GPU-Z, whenever I click max value on the core and memory it shows the same thing, a consistent 100/150.
It doesn't matter if I overclock or not it shows the same 100 for core and 150 for memory. I've disabled powerplay to rule out that issue, so I'm wondering is this a regular thing or something out of the ordinary?
Oh and I can't overclock past 795/1035 without stability issues, which seems quite low compared to others...
Anywho here's my stock 3dmark 11 to show you what I mean.

My max stable clock for 3Dmark11 is 825/1090 where as in BF3, It will crash if clocks are over 810/1050. I see people OCed it to much crazier clocks... -
Yea I guess I was hoping my card would be able to OC as high as some of the others.
I find it strange that it says my mem and core clock are only 100/150 during testing. Might just be that the 12.1 previews aren't authentic for benchmarking yet. -
yea my cards core doesnt hit 880 either. i can only get 840.
but is 100-40 mhz more on the core really going to allow for a better experience as were talking 1 fps differance.
drivers seem to make the most profound differance, sometimes increase framerates by 15percent. -
35-45fps in BF3 sounds about right. Since you can barely manage the same on a GTX 580 at maximum settings, at best. BF3 is the new Crysis, albeit with a much more optimized engine. Also remember you're running the game in DX11, so that will hamper performance a good bit.
The difference between the 6970M and 6990M is around 15-20% at stock, but that's not much to be honest. Don't expect to be able to max out all your games just from that small boost. It's noticeable but not groundbreaking.
