So, i am looking for an SSD solution for this great notebook and am deciding between a single 512GB SSD or two 256GB SSDs in RAID 0. The problem is, these drives would be SATA3 and i know the drive caddy in the optical bay only runs SATA2. How possible would RAID be here? Would both drives run at SATA2 speeds? Would it double the speed of SATA2 if you run the drives in RAID? Not surprisingly, two 256GB drives is a cheaper and potentiallyspeedier solution than a single 512GB if everything worked correctly.

The drive i am looking at is the M4 crucial.

well if you raid it, you will only get sataII speeds out of both of them, putting you about even with sataIII speeds, but with worse access times. My advice would be to spend a little more and just get one drive.

Theres also the matter of no TRIM in RAID. So your performance would drop with use. As suggested above just get one larger SSD.

isnt TRIM support in RAID coming up in the new 11 series IRST update? shouldnt be too long anymore, if its not already implemented....

    cheers

Its not implemented, it was promised almost a year ago and still no news or release in sight.
It also has to be supported in the Bios as a source stated and knowing Clevo that also might present a problem.

    A couple of comments -

    - I ran a pair of 128 gb Vertex 1's in RAID 0 for 18 months with no impact on performance. No TRIM support.

    - Do you really need an SSD that large? 256 GB is quite a bit of space for programs and your OS. IMO the way to go is to a 750 GB 7200 RPM drive in the caddy and use the mSATA w/SRT for a cache with a 256 GB SSD in the main drive bay.

What do you want to do with this laptop? Are you sure that you need that much space on your SSD? Like others have said 256 GB is more than enough room for the vast majority of people. Keep in mind that using a SSD for storage is usually a big waste of money. A 256 GB SSD and a 750 GB HDD might be the way to go, and it will be much cheaper. If you really need the fast access times on your storage drive, you could get a mSata drive to use as cache maybe.

You had to take P170EM or (If you do not need DVI or DisplayPort) buy MSI GT60 (15.6" with 2x SSD/HDD SATA3 on RAID0 + ODD).

I might be getting a p170em since I can't hold out for the delayed p270wm anymore. I was thinking of a 120gb ssd for OS and games, and a 750gb 7200rpm hdd for storage. Maybe I'll get an mSata as well to help out the 750gb hdd. I'm new to understanding the true benefits of mSata, but sounds like the "max performance" mode would help for data transfer to the hdd.
