    P150HM - i7-2720QM - Turbo Boost

    Hi folks,

    I've noticed that my 2720QM Intel i7 is rated to go up to a max turbo boost of 3.3Ghz. Yet under heavy load (Prime 95) it never gets above 2.80Ghz.

    I'm assuming that the 3.3Ghz is a 'best case scenario' figure and that the 'turbo boost' overclock depends on other factors such as power requirements, heat etc.

    Has anyone else noticed anything similar with their i7s?

    The maximum turbo boost is 3.3 on one core and ~2.8-3 on two, and ~2.6-2.8 on all four. Prime95 is running all four cores so you'll never hit that maximum. If you were to run it on only one core, you'd see higher speeds.

    This is due to the way Turbo boost is essentially a pre-programmed overclock. The speeds it can reach and time it can remain at those speeds is limited by heat.

    The time it can remain at those speeds is also limited by the bios. We will have the ability to modify these parameters (increase the time allowed in turboboost) once customized bios are created.

    Not to mention windows has a hissy fit in the event manager about the bios limiting the proc speed. Has the time-in-boost setting been applied to other BIOSes or will this be a fresh/first implementation? Thats awesome tho. This is my first clevo and I'm looking forward to all this modded bios business. :)

    They've done it in the m18x as well as increasing BLK to as high as 105mhz so a boost of .1ghz in base clocks

    Wow, didn't know that! I suppose that's why the 2760qm doesn't show much if any improvement over the 2720qm? They're both boosting to around the same level?

    Not quite the same levels. The 2760 boosts a little higher than the 2720qm. The difference isn't significant, but it's a bit higher all around.
