    Hi,

I was wondering whether it is possible to send audio over the DVI output. It works over the HDMI one, but since my screen only has one HDMI input, I'd rather keep that one connected to my cable tuner and avoid switching cables. Audio over the headphone jack seems to be leaking noise from screen and the optical drive. Thank you for info in advance.

The dvi will only output video. Sorry!

Edit. Perhaps you can look into getting an hdmi switcher box. They're fairly cheap for mid quality one.

OK, not the answer I was hoping to hear but at least I know now.
On a related note, is the buzz from screen and dvd is something I should be worried about? It only presents itself with the TV, not with the headphones. Is it a crappy filter on the TV?

What tommytomatoe replied is not entirely true; while DVI tends to be used for outputting video only on desktop graphics cards with no audio, the culprit there is that the card itself is running through a PCI-E slot and the aforementioned "graphics card" is exactly that; for graphics, and desktop computers tend to have sound cards on their own PCI slot.

I know for a fact that on certain laptops with certain graphics cards this is NOT the case and you are perfectly capable of outputting HDMI through your DVI port (there's a catch, read on). I own a P150HM with a 485M and I hook it up to an HDTV through the DVI port, the only trick here is that the cable I used is DVI female to HDMI male.

If anyone has any doubts with what I've stated previously, Wiki search DVI, answer is there, quoted:

"Features specific to HDMI, such as remote-control, audio transport, xvYCC, and deep-color, are not usable in devices that only support DVI signalling. However, many devices can output HDMI over a DVI output (examples: ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series video cards),[7] and some multimedia displays accept HDMI (including audio) over a DVI input. Exact capabilities vary from product to product."

Again, I used DVI female to HDMI male but what is stated in Wikipedia suggests even some displays accept HDMI over a DVI input.

Hope this helps, hit +Rep if it did.

THe DVI spec does not contain Audio, though there are always outside the spec designs, it is a video only specification.

HDMI on the other hand is a full audio/video solution, and completely different then DVI. DVI is still old school signal technology, HDMI and Display port for that matter are data packet technologies and vastly superior to DVI, and do not need multiple TMDS to make high resolution possible. Biggest issue is, HDMI is a consumer level specification and vastly inferior to Display Port.

I agree that it's a special implementation, as it is stated in the Wiki those cards are examples only. My point being, there are some laptops with this functionality like the P150HM with the 485M which I can confirm myself works as I stated previously, outputting 1080p video with audio; this was the OP's question.

The rest was just a little background to mention that certain DVI outputs on certain devices can, in fact, carry audio.

    Cheers to all!
