I recently have been playing a lot of Diablo III and this is the second time I have experienced a sudden shut down with no warning. Everyone told me it was the temps so I went to office depot, bought a can of compressed air and opened up the back and got rid of the dust in the fans (there was a good amount actually so it was good that I did that)
On a side note, while I was cleaning out the fans I noticed that on the fan blades themselves there is a very fine layer of dust that is almost impossible to get rid of with just the can. Is that normal or should I do something special to get rid of that dust?
Anyways, even just dusting out the fans made a huge difference with my temps. Now while playing Diablo 3 on ultra (but I disable AA because I don't really notice a big difference in 1080p) My temps are normally these...
CPU = 68-73 Celsius depending on the core
GPU = Before it was normally between 85-90, but now after the dusting I noticed it's between like 79-83 max
This is the strange part. I was actually doing Act 3 Inferno and I was about to kill Azmodan when suddenly it shut down. What makes it strange is that right before the fight I minimized the game and the max temp registered with CPUID Monitor said 83 Celsius for the GPU and like 74 for the CPU
Is it possible for the temps to rise so quickly that it shut down within like... 10 minutes? And if so, how can I prevent this problem from happening again. I'm pretty sure I cleaned out the fans quite well. Perhaps it could be another problem? I honestly don't know and would appreciate anyone's knowledge who has experienced a similar problem.

Diablo 3 did this to your GPU? Wow.
But if you think your up to it, reapplying the thermal compound to the cpu and gpu and tightening the screws connecting the cooler to those parts should do the trick. I had a similar problem with a desktop radeon I had, and after I applied coolant and screwed in tight it no longer crashed.
Normally if something just shuts down, it was in order to protect the machine so you were right to assume its the temperatures. And the temperature can change a lot faster than you would think. Just watch a graph from when you are idle to when you are playing a game, the temps shoot up to a new max in usually under 30 seconds. -

Do you have a laptop cooler plugged in one of your USB ports?
If so, try to disconnect the cable and try to run without cooler.
See if you get the shutdowns now.
This happened to me as well but upon Mr.Dj advice I tried with it disconnected and got my stability back. The power drained by the cooler made the system unstable, I'm using notepal u3 btw. -

Try without it mate, it doesn't cost anything.

3 things here:
1. Repaste CPU and GPU
2. Get rid of the cooler master. If it has fans these are probably zapping more power than is available from the 5V usb port.
3. Elevate, elevate and elevate the rear two stands. Use water bottle caps, beer bottle caps, Cheese cubes LOLwhatever and get the rear up by at least 2cm. I use local coin currency drive my dollars further... LOL
Good luck.. -
As for the cooler master. Should I turn down the intensity of the fan or just keep it unplugged? Either way I can still use the pad just not plugged in because it adds nice elevation to the laptop.
So far it hasn't happened again and I'm playing with the cooler master unplugged. Thanks for the tips guys. -
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
If unplugging your cooler fixed the problem, then you don't have to repaste.
People are assuming you overheated (which you didnt) and so you don't need to repaste. If you use HWMonitor, it'll give you your max temps as you play, so that's good because by exiting your game, the temps could drop a few degrees C. As long as you're below 90C you're fine... although in reality you could prob go up to 99C and it wouldnt thermal shutdown (from my experiences with a Vaio Z, Sager could always have a lower threshold) -
as Kingpinzero said if youve got it plugged directly into a usb port then it could be too much drain.
buy a powered 4 way usb extention and that might sort it (if it is that causing it).
