Ive tried to type on the keyboard today a bit and find it to be a bit too loud. After taking it off i noticed why. The keyboard is built really well and solid with a thick metal base (much better quality than that of the G73JH which would bend just when you held it) which rattles on the plastic underneath if you type with higher pressure/faster.
Is this everyones expirience?
It helps a bit if i put something in between like a piece of paper, but im not sure if its wise to use paper with holes cut where the ribbon, ram and wifi are to let those dissipate heat so only covering the plastic chassis parts (could it maby still burn there?). Something like a thin microfibre cloth gets rid of the rattle alltogether but again im not sure if its wise to use it. Anyone done anything like this or has a suggestion what would be best to use?

MSI laptops were plagued by noisy keyboards. There solution was 2 sided tape. I should mention that I would be careful with how much tape to use. You dont want it so stuck down that it will damage the keyboard removing it. You should try a bit of masking tape in a loop in a few critical areas.
-
I just put in two small pieces of thin cardboard in the critical areas so the metal no longer hits the plastic and its completely quiet now. The ignition temperature of paper is around 230 C and cardboard around 420 C so i should be safe.
But the doublesided tape sounds good too. What kind would be good to use so it doesnt melt/catch fire or loose its stickiness when heated? I have no concerns it could bend or damage the keyboard though, as i said its built really solid with a thick metal base unlike most keyboards which just have a thin foil and bend easily.
Can anyone else confirm this isnt an isolated case? Does your keyboard also rattle a bit when typing harder in some places? -
Could you maybe post some pics of you putting the cardboard in for people like me that will be getting their laptop in the future?
I'm not really sure what you're describing as I don't have mine yet
Thanks -
Mine also rattled a bit and you know what? One-sided tape actually does the job just as well as two sided tape. I think the actual effect isnt so much sticking the keyboard base to the chassis as is simply making the keyboard fit more snugly.
I just applied about 2-3 strip thickness along the top and side outline of the keyboard and it worked like a charm. -
So this isnt just mine but a design fault then. Good to know
. Most people probably dont even notice it or dont care about the slight rattle, but if youre slightly ocd about such things then why not fix it
.
I will post photos of my final solution once i have time. I havent even installed an OS yet, just inspected the laptop and checked the bios.

My P151's keyboard rattles pretty badly over the disc drive, I've thought about stuffing something inbetween that area but I'm too lazy
-
how loud is it..?

I'm also experiencing this. It's not that loud but you can hear the rattling underneath which is not normal. If your meticulous as I am, you get easily annoyed by it.
-
I agree w/ synce, the disk drive is the only thing that causes noise for me.
-
I forgot to take a photo, but my final solution was doublesided tape (M3 with a melting point of 143C just in case) and the keyboard rattles no more. I put a small strip under "Enter" and another on the plastic between the ram and wifi.

No, the area over the wifi is fine for me... The only noise would be hitting hard the arrow keys area since that part of the chassis echoes probably cause the ODD area is a bit more hollow but i dont see a way to fix that...

Tried it, no noise now with the tape under it.

No its real thin. No bulges, I dont want it to be noticeable

Ok, I hope someone can help me with the rattling over at the wifi area? I'm thinking it has no solution since there is no plastic surface in that area?

I just noticed that this thread is for the P150HM (NP8150). I have the P151HM1 (NP8130). Maybe that explains the difference why I still have this subtle keyboard rattle in the WSAD area?

Well if you've read through the thread I did the exact same thing and while it did minimize the rattling, it did not eliminate it 100%. -
but regarding that you've done the exact same thing, well it doesn't mean you'll get the same result, obviously, it varieties.
-
I found that on my laptop the "rattling? is NOT the keyboard but what is under it, most notably on the right hand side (the optical drive). By removing it most of my rattle went away, but yes there is still some... I guess that is due to the keyboard flexing and being separated from the actually unit.
=) -
I agree with korodic about agreeing with synce. That disk drive is the only thing that causes noise for me too.

anyone got a video of the 'rattling'?
-
Hmm strange, I have the P150HM and I have none of the rattling described in this thread.

I did some more testing and i can conclude the only "noise" now is over the optical drive bay - its a deeper hollow sound when typing (no more rattling though with the keyboard stuck to the plastic). Anyone have any "solution" for that (i know many wont notice the difference, but as i said im a perfectionist and i do notice it)?
I did have to use a decent ammount of doublesided tape though to properly secure the keyboard so its really tightly attached to the underlying plastic to eliminate the rattle. I got an even better tape now - a Tesa doublesided tape that withstands up to 200C, is really thin and is meant for sticking metals and plastic so its perfect for this purpose. Its a big red roll if youre looking for it (the tape itself is transparent, just the plastic foil on it is red). -

As for me, I have a "different" key stroke sound in the ASWD buttons. I'm not sure if it's rattling but is definitely not as normal sounding as the buttons, say in the middle of thekeyboard like T Y U G H etc. -
Id rather be safe then sorry. Just using a common doublesided tape might leave you with a melted sticky mess if things got a bit hotter in there with prolonged heavy load (most are rated at 60C). Plus this one is specifically meant for metal and plastic and holds really well. Ill take a photo of the tape when i get home.
About the "wasd" keys i dont know what to tell you, they sound the same as the rest of the keyboard on mine now (except the part over the OD ofc). -

Its as thin as a sheet of paper
.
Id have a hard time removing the keyboard now (i could but i really dont want to as its stuck to the base perfectly now) so if you make a photo of the plastic under the keyboard i can mark where ive put pieces of this tape. -

I would be carefull about how much 2 sided tape you install. If it gets tighter from heat and age you might ruiin the keyboard if you have to remove it in the future. I would use a very small piece and try it. no point in overkill.
-
I spread smaller pieces of the tape under the keyboard so its properly seated in there... As i said if you can find me a photo i can show you where. If you mean if i put more strips one above the other i didnt, i dont want it to be thick and make the keyboard bulge.
The store i bought it from uses it on a regular basis and they leet me peel some plastic that had been stuck to a radiator using this tape to answer my concerns so it doesnt get tighter with age or heat. That was my concern too before i tried. Anyway the keyboard is built pretty solid as i said with a thicker metal base so im not worried should i ever need to take it off again, i just dont want to if i dont have to as i really got it seated so well now.
