So earlier this week I noticed my gpu was hitting 100 C on Skyrim so I decided to redo the thermal paste and clean it. I found 2 large chunks of dust blocking the gpu and gpu vent and removed them. Then I repasted using prolimatech pk-1 and replaced the stock thermal pads on the gpu with fujipoly. So I tested after the repaste and temps after a vantage run was 80C cpu and 85C gpu, idle for both are about 45C, room temp 28C. Now, if I run either furmark or occt, the temperature spikes. 3 min into furmark the 6990m hits 97C and i just end the burn, occt makes cpu hit 90C within 1 min. Does this mean I did a bad job pasting since heavy load makes the temperature spike? I've searched various threads regarding 6990m and it seems some people have been able to contain the temperature around 80 during burn in. So what should I do?

are u using fn+1 during the stress test? did u check if the heatsink screws were tightly fastened? what kind of paste application method did u choose?

i never heard about functioning fan control on the P150HM before, no matter which tool was used.... u sure u tried Fn+1 and not Fn+F1?
-
damn I fail at reading, Fn+1 works. Retested with full fan, furmark holds a steady 93C throughout the 15 min burn, but OCCT stopped after 1 min because one of the cpu core exceeded 85C. Vantage run give 72 on the gpu and 80c on the cpu, but the 4 cores have 8C betweens themselves.
-
as for the cpu,try applying a thin line of thermal paste in the middle of the die and let it spread evenly by the heatsink pressure. in general tho, several degrees difference between cores is usual and nothing to worry about really.
u could also try and raise the back of ur laptop a bit in order to improve air intake. i myself use two plastic bottle caps, they work wonders!
another thing to try is to apply some aluminum adhesive foil on the miniscule gaps between the cpu/gpu fan casing and the heatsink fins. u can get that kinda tape on ebay for a couple of bucks and itll give u improved temps due to better hot air exhaust. in my case it helped in kombustor and furmark by 5C

You may want to try another compound (shouldn't make much of a difference though; maybe 1 C+/-).
Try reapplying the pad. Your temps don't sound too bad with the fans turned up, but they stand to be a bit better. And is the laptop elevated - or at least situated to where heat can flow freely from it? -
Ok I repasted the cpu with a line down the middle and used 2 bottle caps to raise up the laptop. Now OCCT hasn't even passed 72C with fans on automatic. Vantage run yields 63C on cpu and 69C on the gpu. Room temp was 17C. I guess this isn't the best temp people have gotten but i'll redo it again come summer. So the other mods I can do are taping the heatsink and fan to form a duct to the vent and putting more tiny heatsinks on the stock heatsink?
-
yep, just like so:
those copper ram coolers dont actually lower the temps, but they help prolonging the time it takes to reach max. temps
im glad u got ur temps under control now buddy! keeping those in check will surely keep ur hardware alive and kicking for a long time to come -
I just checked with another furmark 15 min burn in, 89C steady this time. What I'm worried about is during the summer when room temp hits 30C  Is there a way to know if the heatsink and the cpu/gpu die made good tight contact? I can see the pastes have been spread but i'm wondering if the contact was tight to begin with? On a desktop I can feel the contact then clamp it tight, here I just have to hope the screws will do a good job.

It should look something along these lines (maybe with slightly better filling): http://benchmarkreviews.com/images/articles/Best_Thermal_Paste_Application_Methods/Round_TIM_Center_Drop_Spread.jpg -
ok I will try again this weekend to see if I can improve the temps
-
so if ur gpu/cpu dont hit 90C there, they never will in regular benches and games! thatll give u a nice buffer for the summertime. also, when the sun is out ure not supposed to sit at home and game but rather go out and have fun!

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but with room temp at around 22-25 my GPU now gets to over 100C on games like Witcher 2 and Alan Wake. I've cleaned the vents again but it's no help
-
how did u clean the vents exactly? cuz if its from the outside it might not suffice to get them properly cleaned out. also, check the fans themselves if theyre clogged with dust. last thing to do would be to repaste both gpu and cpu, cuz thermal paste also wears down after a while.

Are you also opening up the computer and blowing out the fans from any dust. If the vents are clean thats what you want to do next.
I see you have the NP8150 which could be 1.5-2yrs old, if you just had stock thermal compound on there it could be all dried up. Consider reapply new, better thermal compound. -

Blowing the vents out helps, but what works best is to simply open up the laptop and wipe things off. Sometimes you're simply blowing dust and what not around in the system if you do so without opening the case, and that doesn't always get everything out of the fans or heat sinks.
Lastly, it's worth checking the paste as jaybee and Hutsady pointed out. -

I got an answer to that in a different thread, better to use one layer.

Ok, I re did the pasting on the core and changed all the double and triple layer thermal pad to single layer. Looks like I had used too much thermal paste on the core before. Temperature dropped about 10-15C on average. Alan Wake (this game is really good at raising temps) maxes out at 93C with room temp at 29C. The only problem is, the first time I ran Alan Wake I got a full screen artifact when the GPU reached 87C. I shut off the laptop right away, and on restart it did a full screen artifact before the Windows logo. So I let the entire thing cool for like 20 min. Now it seems alright. I guess there really isn't much room to improve since the card is hot and 29C ambient isn't that low to start with.
P150HM temp spike between normal use and burn testing, redo cooling?
