I installed Windows 8.1 and hotkey- driver went berserk. Not a real problem as I use it only to shutdown the keyboard backlight. All other functions that I need, work without the driver, like the mute/ sound- buttons.

And the driver increases startup- time, so I prefer not to install it again, as its a real pain in the . Tried different versions and newest ofcourse, but same problems with windows 8.1

So, my real question is: Can you disable the backlight withouth the hotkey driver? SImple one click- driver/ peace of code that could be used or even some feature inside windows maybe?

As Prema's biosmod isn't ready and I don't know if it even possible to disable backlight from bios, I am trying to find another way. The keyboard connector is single peace so physical disable- method seems unlikely?

Any method is appreciated. Just a simple way to disable the backlight all together.

Open C:\Program Files (x86)\Hotkey, find LEDKB.exe, and set a shortcut for it on the desktop. You can open that without the hotkey driver running and set colors to black/off manually.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it for a while. Is there a way to separate the led- controller from the entire driver?

Hi csand, about the idle speed: usage goes zero. According to CPUZ the speed is usually at idle in desktop about 798Mhz. I had to install Windows 8.1 four(4) times before getting the VGA- drivers to work! So it has lots of problems. I even called the windows support line and they said that windows 8 pro- users have had lots of problems with the windows store- 8.1 update.

But the hotkeys like volume, brightness etc. work fine withouth the hotkey- driver. Just can't use the ones that controll the backlight for keyboard.

Amy- BanMin thank you for the input. Those keys wont work without the hotkey- driver :/ .

4900mq , smasung 256gb ssd and nvidia gtx780m. But I believe that the biggest problems with the win 8.1 are the intel drivers. Chipset and video. Those drivers were nearly impossible to install and they made weird erros all the time. Even now when they installed properly, I see weird gpu and processor problems from time to time. I think I might need to change back to Win8 to get rid of all the problems :/ Windows 8 pro updated to 8.1 from store here btw. Four times :D

    Problem solved

If you was not able to turn on and change the color of your backlight keyboard on P150SM or P157SM, like me i now have the solution!

    1. Go to Software Upgrade

    2. Find Windows 8 Hot Key Utility for Windows 8 32/64 BIT - Download it (30,0 MB)

    3. Install and enjoy!

If you'd like, I *shifty eyes* might have a Win 8.1 ISO (for clean 8.1 install, no store upgrade required) and some instruction on how to use it. It's legit, from MS, and requires your Windows 8 activation key to activate.

I got a new P150SM. The backlight isnt working. I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro, and tried the Windows 8 Hot Key Utility in different versions (8.0134). Tried to switch it on/off via the FN+special Keys. But there is absolutly no backlight. I never saw the backlight working. Should it work when the notebook boots? Any idea?

On my p170, the backlight comes on at boot, and I don't have the hotkey program installed.

Yes it's likely on the hardware side with a new machine.

The keyboard driver on mine has been kind of finicky as well. But overall mines kind of hated me. It seems like stuff is settling though and its all going to normal. My issues were that the lights on the far left side would quit working until i restarted.

Mine actually seemed to fixed out after i installed this driver:
Hotkey driver (8.0145) for Windows 8.1 64-bit version.
