First we need a 2nd bottom cover some glue and a cutter razor blade.

1.we cut the gpu and cpu fan intakes in circle like this

2.then we stuck the black mesh with some glue inside of the bottom cover.

3.the we put the cover back on the laptop.

now temps results!!room temp is 22.5 all tests.

    vantage test before cooling mod.

    vantage after cooling mod

vantage 820-1000 overclock after cooling mod.

as u see the core is down 1 degree, memory 3 degrees nad shader 2.5 degrees.

    3d mark 11 before mod

    3d mark 11 after mod

    Furmark 10 mins before mod

    Furmark 10 mins after mod

at monday i ll re-pad my 6970m with Fujipoly 1mm pads and post more results!!

As you can see, i have opened the 2 in the middle and my cpu temps are 1-2 degrees lower than they used to be. I have also repasted with ICD7 using the "line" method. Gpu temps were not affected.

Verdict: Go for it!!!!! Both CPU and GPU need air, you have to open them in order to ensure optimum airflow!

Above you mentioned about re-padding with 1mm pads. This is something I had in the back of my mind since I re-did mine with IC7. I noticed the IC7 was a bit thicker and probably raised the heatsink above the stock black pad which is probably doing nothing now. So I'm assuming that 1mm is the correct thickness to get with the IC7?

yeah, a 60 x 50 x 1 pad is only like $5. I had doubts the stock black pad was doing anything after I put on IC7 lol. Think I'll place an order right now.

Thank you for going to the effort of writing this guide, however unless some serious overclocking is going on I do not feel that mutilating the case in such a manner and installing wire mesh with unreliable superglue is worth a temperature drop of up to 4 degrees under load, especially when the GPUS at stock clicks are a good 20 degrees below their threshold.

My 485/580M's idle at 30 - 40 degrees. When the fans stop completely and the GPU climbs over 40 they will turn on again and shut down when it drops below 38 ish.

Undervolt by .0 something and you get the same result... Or just simply put some cubic copper heatsinks on top of the part where the CPU/GPU lies...

Heat the blade of an exacto knife with a torch, stove element (or even a lighter should work but takes more time). Take your time and carve away, like a hot knife in butter... you can trim the edge after with the cold exacto blade to finish it off to your liking. Maybe start in the material you will dispose of to get a feel for how it carves.

i used a conical grinding point in my drill press, but any drill will work. its like this one, and anything between a half and 3/4 of an inch is ideal. Pink Conical Mounted Grinding Stones

ok kewl, so now on kombustor after 5 minutes it went to 64, steady for a minute and a half, and then it started going between 63 and 64 at 4:30 which i find odd, anyways ill count it as 64 since that was the max anyways, so yes i dropped 5 degrees in kombustor, by adding the two fans, and intakes and exaust.

This mod is a "must-do". The machine screams for more air. So buy an extra back cover and grab the tools!

LOL, I'll save that for the adventurous types. I spent over $2K on my machine, so I'm not cutting holes in anything.

The only thing that gets a hole cut into it in this transaction, is my wallet. :)

The GPU from 38-39c on idle,it went down to 30-33 max,and after playing BF3 it went no more than 76c with heavy overclock (1010/1560 :D)and the CPU as you can see i run the extreme one whits is more hot cpu.i went from all cpus running 81-85c max, playing BF3 for 30 min,to 74-76-74-81 max.well thanks the notepad coolermaster U3,whits i put the coolers direct under the holes i made so they can cool down the CPU and GPU :D

Nice! All I can think though is dust. I cleaned my heatsinks the other day and was greeted by globs of lint, kinda like the kind from a dryer. Before I started using the U3 cooler it wasn't as bad. I'm sure you already do but it will be good active to clean it out once a month of not more, especially if you have cats or dogs
