I found some old threads asking similar questions but nothing this specific. I am looking to purchase a P151HM1 with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5 which is 'User Upgradeable'. Could I possible update this card with a ATI 6990M in the future? Or only with NVIDIA cards?

Also is it as easy as matching the bus type and speed when upgrading like it is on a desktop system motherboard?

    Thanks

To go to a 6990 or 580M you will need a new power brick, the card, and heatsink.

I would have to do a search but there are a couple places. They are just high $ atm though.

For P151HM1 model, the max TDP acceptable by the video card is 75watt. By "user replaceable", they meant that, if a future video card comes out that is better than 560m but retains its TDP of 75w, you can upgrade your video card, given that the new card also retains its MXM spec.

And, no, the laptop's cooling solution isn't designed for 6990m.

Dual fan just as the 8150, correct? Even the resellers have said you can do it. Where does the improper cooling come in if there is no difference?

There is no difference. You can install the 100w TDP GPU's into the P151HM1, but you need to use the 180w PSU. The cooling is pretty identical between them. It will potentially cause warranty problems down the road though. (It's not a supported upgrade by Clevo).

Quadro 3000M can work on P151HM as far as I know.

Think the 6 series, or 7 series from nVidia when released with be compatible?

Ideally yes, but it's all up to Nvidia as they control the MXM standard in addition to releasing the new cards.

Personally, I would rather not upgrade once a laptop is purchased with exception of HDDs (or SSDs). I don't find them worth the money. I'd rather save up and get a whole new one 1 or 2 years later.

Your GTX 560m is using the MXM 3.0b standard. Nvidia owns the MXM standard, and as such, they can change the standard to a new revision at any time. If they do change it, then your laptop's GPU upgradability will become nearly non-existant. Please keep that in mind when looking to upgrade in the future. Always check the MXM revisions!!

Exactly bro, go for P151HM1. ( I was in the exact same situation )
You can upgrade to 6990m, but the price is too high. You will be happy with GTX 560m now. Maybe in a few months when price drops, grab that beast and slap it in.

From 8 to 16GB? No, probably not. The only exception would be high performance simulators that can suck up all available RAM. Most mainstream games won't need any more than 8GB. I only run with 16GB because I have a lot of workstation tasks that can use it up.
