Hello, I am posting this on behalf of my friend. He is having issues with his P151SM-A. He was playing FFXIV and was chatting with someone in discord when FFXIV suddenly crashed. He did a reboot on his laptop after the crash and then after he logged back in to windows he wasn't able to run FFXIV anymore due to a fatal directx error after launching the game and also noticed Nvidia Control Panel is crashing when ever he tried to open it.

He checked device manager and found out that there is a code 43 error on the video card. We tried every fix we found in the internet but It wont resolve the issue. He then tried reformatting the laptop but the issue still remains. We did discovered earlier this afternoon that Nvidia driver version 35x and 368.81 wont cause the error 43 in device manager but the issue with FFXIV still remains. I will ask him to try other games and see if the same issue would happen.

We are running out of ideas on this. I am posting this so hopefully someone could help us find solutions on fixing his laptop.

His laptop specs are as follows:

    CPU - I7 4710 MQ
    GPU - gtx 870m
    Ram - 8GB
HDD - Samsung SSD EVO 840 SSD
OS - Windows 7 home premium

    Thanks in advance!

Use display driver uninstaller from wagnard
you should be able than install the latest driver for the gpu..

Another option is to verify the games cache if it is through steam..
Also you can look in the directory where the game is installed and you can reinstall the Directx.
    That might help...

If this is happening to other games indeed let us know.

Check that the gpu is not overheating or anything of the sort... (hwmonitor) while underload and idle.

Sounds indicative of a failing/dead video card. They can be repaired if that's the case, but lifespan following a repair is kind of nebulous, if not usually brief.

We've been using DDU for every driver versions we tried. Anything above driver version 368.81 will cause Error code 43 in device manager.

He tried verifying but for some reason the option to verify game cache was greyed out. He also tried running the dx setup found inside the folder but issue is still there.

He tried running Dota 2 and its also giving dx errors.

I does look like the gpu is dying/dead. :(
Worse part is its already way beyond warranty so we tried every avenue possible to troubleshoot the issue.

Anyway is it possible to install a different gpu on this machine? Maybe a gtx 970m or a 1060?

yes it is. You can upgrade everything up to a GTX 1070, however with pascal GTX 10xx series you will have to mod heatsink otherwise it will get very toasty. Other than that a 970M or 980M would be easiest way to do it. Also it would be really fast.

As a high level dota 2 player which plays on a 980M i can tell you thats all you need really, the game is more CPU dependant than anything else. Stable frames in teamfights are also more important than simply high frames.

That sounds great. Will the gtx 870m heatsink work with the gtx 970m without modding or do we need to buy a compatible heatsink? Also do we need to update bios before we proceed?

Thats really good news. Thanks again for the information. I really appreciate it. Now we just need to look for a gpu seller.

If you go through a private seller (e.g. eBay), just make sure it's a Clevo card.

Hello all. I am really sorry for not getting back to this thread sooner. After thinking about it and weigh in his options, my friend decided to just go take the desktop route instead of replacing the gpu in his laptop.

He didnt mention why but i believe he managed to get a very good deal with a desktop system.

Again, thank you all for the responses here.
