Hey does anyone know whether a P151em could be made to work with an intel 3920xm?.

I know the thread linked below already exists but I was wondering if anyone had any first hand/better information on what would have to be done to get a P151em to work with intel extreme(Besides upgrading power adapter) as it is claimed that the P151em doesn't support the 3920xm.

Well If I'm right the P151em and P150em have a slightly different chassis. With the P150em having rubberized touchpad/surfaces while the P151em has a more plasticky feeling. I always thought that the P150em and P151em had identical motherboards(which would suggest that if the P151em couldn't support the 3920xm, it would be able to after a BIOS change etc) but I've also heard otherwise.

Yeah that would also be true. But besides that, the rubberized surfaces and the PSU difference I don't know of any other differences.

I would not bother with 3920xm as 3720qm / 3820qm seems to already max out thermal limits of p150em cooling system, besides I dont think p151em bios supports XTU so you would be far better off spending the extra money on p150em. 3720qm with XTU OC will beat 3920xm without XTU support, - since flashing P170EM bios (for XTU support) my 3720qm sits at a comfortable 3.8Ghz with all 4 cores at full utilization in prime.

P151EM doesn't support XTU sadly, you might want to use that extra 680 GBP on something like a GTX680M and/or a SSD.

P151EM, like the P150EM, and P170EM supports XTU after bios flash to P170EM. But, You will not be able to make full use of the XM processor in this barebone because of the limit of the cooling system. Take P151 with i7 [email protected]. It is most reasonable configuration. Of course, with a minimum 230W power supply. :)

It is possible yes. Although XTU overclocking or BIOS OC is not supported.

How do you know the P170EM BIOS will work on the P151EM and would allow XTU to control the CPU? I really would like to overclock but don't want to brick my laptop without more information or some else trying it first.

There's always a chance of bricking.

A chance you'll have to take if you want to have the option of XTU, although there might be a matter of small differences in the P151EM versus the P150EM.. can't say as I do not know

Both motherboards (P170EM and P151EM) differ only the power connector and keyboard connector (26pin for P150/170EM and 24pin for P151EM).
The only thing that may not work properly, is the keyboard. :)

Thanks for the replies guys, I just noticed though from one of your other posts jaug1337 that the i7-3610QM isn't supported by XTU to do overclocking. I'll hold off doing the bios switching for now but if I upgrade the CPU later I am definitely going take the XTU feature into consideration.

What CPU feature do I look for if the CPU is overclockable in XTU? There will probably be new CPUs out by the time I am looking to buy one and Googling "XTU + i7-(CPU Model) Support" wasn't finding anything.

    Thanks again.

You'll not be able to OC any CPU in XTU in a P151EM unless you modify the BIOS into a P170EM (which I would advice not to since it requires a little knowledge)

Just buy a 3610QM or 3720QM and be happy, they are insanely strong anyways.
