I plan on keeping my P157SM (Sager NP8255-S) running for the long haul (at least three years, perhaps five years), which raises a concern about the long-term availability of replacement batteries.

This exact model laptop has been discontinued and replaced with the P157SM-A, which appears to use the same battery. A replacement battery currently costs $100 from Sager direct. Even with battery compatibility retained, I'm not sure how long Clevo will continue to make these batteries, so I plan on getting an extra battery and keeping it in the fridge 40% charged for long-term storage until the stock battery fails.

How long can I expect replacement batteries to be available for? Should I get a new battery now and keep it in cold storage until needed, or wait until later? (The Dragon has been in service for about seven months. The battery has been well-maintained and typically gives me three hours on a charge, but I can't predict how long it'll last before I need to replace it.)

You could contact your reseller or Sager directly and ask.

If you plan on getting a spare at some time, now would be the best time to do so. They really dont drop in price, and at least now there is availability.

Then again, lithium-ion batteries degrade over time regardless of whether they're used. While cold storage at 40% greatly extends useful life, I'd rather wait as much as possible.

The battery has been in use since the HM series, as for when it's replaced I don't know but they wont go over night.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just ordered a new battery from Sager direct. $100, free shipping.

I'll test the battery, bring it to 40-50%, and keep it in the fridge. I guess I won't have to worry too much about the battery any more...

I don't think it would have been a problem to pick it up in 2 years time say but you should be sorted now I guess, just make sure to be careful of avoiding shorts across the terminals from condensation in the fridge.
