Has anyone managed to find a way to get the Steelseries backlit keyboard to work on the previous gen P170/NP8170 notebooks?

kb size wouldnt match the HM series. also, theres no LED connector on the HM series mobos, so theres just no chance whatsoever to get it installed there.

Jaybee is correct, the older Sager laptops did not come equipped with a socket for the ribbon cable for the backlighting.

Keyboards were a bit different as well.

Sorry, impossible mission. Also, when you say P170 you really could be talking about two very different models that would get different answers for that question.

We were able to get a SteelSeries keyboard to work with a Sager laptop but your key mappings for the Fn keys will be bound to Sager.

In other words, even though the SteelSeries shows the volume controls as Fn+left/right arrow keys you will still have to use the Fn+F5/F6 (forgive me I can't remember the key mappings as clearly on the Sager) to adjust your volume.

backlighting worked with the SteelSeries keyboard in the Sager, but you are limited to the Sager light controls and it will not play nice with the MSI KLM.
