I have a P170EM, and recently the HD7970M card died (artefacts and then refused to boot windows)
Checking a Linux (Ubuntu) it was getting failed to initialise the VGPU. So I guessed the card had died, I decided to replace the card, and upon searching found a aHD8970M at a reasonable price, which I bought.
I decided to see what would happen if I cooked the old card (Very sceptical I have to say!!!!), well I put it on some foil risers on each corner, cranked the oven up to 230C and put the card in (on an oven tray), keeping an eye on the oven temp, once it hit 230, I set a timer for 11mins and at that point turned the oven off, and left the card in until the oven had cooled to under 80C.
Learning by mistakes, I should have removed the thin plastic cover around the main chip - as it would seem that it stuck to a couple of Surface mount capacitors and well, lifted them off the board (at that point I thought it was game over for the card).
However after it had cooled, I popped it in and did a quick Ubuntu boot, and there were no VGPU errors, so I switched off and then added a little thermal paste and did the heatsinks.
Booted into windows and it recognised the card, and a quick techpowerup GPU-Z showed the card reading as I would expect (clocks and memory etc).
Tested then with CompuBench 2.0, it worked.
Tested with Elite Dangerous - It worked.
How long it will last for, I don't know - but In my amazement, the card is now working (even with 3 SMD caps missing!!!!)
Cheers All

7970(clevo) from my notebook was 7 min @ 200° and then works for 10 months, then she died again so I "baked" it one more time and works again. For my own peace of mind I bought 8970m.
