    P170EM Fans randomly spinning up and down..

    Even when the computer is just sitting there at the desktop, nothing running at all. Is this normal?

    Typically that is not normal. Are you running any temperature monitor programs to see what you temps are. There could be background processes going making the temps just higher enough to trigger the fans. Are the bottom vents unobstructed so the air intakes properly. You said its on a desk to i assume so but if there is anything blocking those it will cause temps to rise causing the fans to kick on.

    no, I don't use any kind of temp monitor software and the laptop is sitting on a clean desk with very well breathing room.

    see attached picture for my processes when nothing is going on and it's just at the desktop.
