Bought a 128GB SSD as my C: drive when I first bought this laptop back in ~November 2012. That's full. I ordered a Samsung 850Evo 500GB to replace it, but I'm running into problems. Bought an external case to hook it up via USB3, and it won't read the drive. The lights on, so it's getting power, and I've tried all 4 USB ports, and none of them will show it is reading the new SSD. I wanted to transfer the files to this SSD to be my primary drive, and maybe use the old drive as an additional external if possible. The CD-ROM works that came with the 850 Evo, but it just won't read the drive itself. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the drive formatted and partitioned?
try plugging it back in and loading up partitioning software to check it.

Okay it's been a while since I've done much in the tech side of life, how do I format it if the laptop won't let me access it? A really dumb question I'm sure, I've just been out of the loop for a long time now.

Nothing shows in Disk Management when the drive is connected? And are your USB 3.0 ports working otherwise?

That's correct. I moved my wireless mouse around, stuck a flash drive in, the USB 3.0 ports are all working. Even the external enclosure has the light on when you plug it in, so it's receiving power.

You might want to put the drive in an available SATA port in the computer and see whether it shows up in BIOS or not (and then in Windows). The P170EM has a dedicated bay for one drive and another SATA connection just below the optical drive. If the drive still doesn't appear to work when connected to a SATA port, you're probably looking at a DOA drive.

Yeah I'll pull the D drive off, and try it. Thanks. Whats the best way to get the C drive out from under the optical drive? I've had it a part and didn't want to pull on too many things.
