    Hello,

I have recently run into a problem with my P170EM where after about an hour or so playing BF4, the laptop will shut itself off as if there was an overheating issue. So far BF4 is the only thing which seems to trigger it. One of the cooling fans (not sure which one yet) will go to max rpm and if I dont exit out of the game the laptop will shut off.
If I do exit the game fast enough it will keep running and the fan speed drops once back to the desktop, however, if i then try to go back into any process which requires heavy gpu use either immediately or after an extended pause the laptop shuts off as before.
Initially suspected overheating but temps under load were around 70-75 degrees. Just to be sure I opened it up and did a re paste, cleaned the vents and heat sinks but the problem persisted. The last time this occurred i couldn't get the laptop to start up at all. It would shut off at the windows loading screen. I removed the gpu completely and tried starting it that way and managed to get to the desktop but both fans were at full rpm and when i tried to shut them off the laptop would shut off completely.
Eventually I did manage to get it started and running stable with all the components installed but i haven't put it under any serious load since, just web browsing and so far no issues. Im guessing if I do try to do any gaming though it will do the same as before.
Can anyone shed any light on this issue as its getting to be a bit of a worry now.

    Regards, Brandon

    System Specs: AMD 7970M ; Intel i7-3740QM ; 8GB HyperX RAM ; 840 Pro SSD ; 1TB HD

PS: I had to get a new PSU for the laptop about 2 months ago as the old one failed but it was a direct replacement from MySN and there have been no issues until now.

    hi and welcome to nbr

youve done most of the things we would of suggested first.
what programs do you monitor your temps with and do you take the readings while the game is running or shortly afterwards. temps can drop upto 10c within a few seconds of stopping the game so they wont give true readings.

you could run after burner graph in the background to get a reading of all the time playing and see if it peaks much into the 90c+ mark

next things to check would be the hard drives and ram.

all the programs you need to monitor can be found in my link below.
try HD Tune for hard drives. also a free ssd monitor at the bottom of page. and mem test for ram.
to monitor temps i use core temps and hd monitor and hwinfo64 is very good as well.
as i said for a graph while playing you could try msi afterburner.

i would also log a ticket on mysn support page.

Hi MrDj thanks for the reply.

I used gpu z I think it was for temps and got it to log the temperatures as the laptop was being used. So when I say the temps didn't exceed 75 degrees those were logged in a text file over the hour or so of game play/stress tests.

The problem has gotten worse now to the point where the laptop stays on for a minute at most. I tried to start up BF4 yesterday a few times but noticed as soon as the 7970 started working the laptop shut off. Again I tried to start it without the card installed, in safe mode, wiped all the graphics drivers, did another repaste, alternated the RAM sticks, tried booting on battery alone, PSU alone and combined and eventually took the laptop apart completely to have a look at the main board. So far nothing has worked and there appears on be no visible damage (charring etc) on the main board.

I am sending the 7970m, processor, RAM and SSD to a friend of mine who also has the same model laptop and was wondering if one of these components is faulty, could damage be done to his laptop by swapping my components with his to test them????? It's the quickest way we can think of to get a definitive guide as to what is faulty.

Also during a brief period where I had the laptop working for an extended period I ran a stress test on the cpu and there were no issues. I couldn't get one to run on the vga card though before it shutdown totally.

    Regards Brandon.
