    Hi there,

i am trying to update my BIOS so that i can get the Nvidia 860 GTX card to work.

I am following the guides and when trying to flash bios in DOS screen, i am getting warning prompt about compatibility issues of 32 / 64 bit ?

What could be going wrong ?

u wont have a lot of luck getting the 860M working on the HM series...unless it was a typo and ure talking about the 680M ;)

in a DOS environment, 32/64 bit shouldnt matter. but ull actually have to be IN DOS and NOT just start a command window inside windows ;)

best to boot into dos from a usb stick and then flash there

well then youre out of luck, i havent seen a single success story in making the 800M series function on the HM series. same goes for 700M and 900M series!

nvidia 400M, 500M, 600M, as well as AMD 6000M and 7000M series work in the HM machines. also, the equivalent Nvidia Quadro and AMD FirePro cards work

Did you try to bake your HD 6990 in the oven?
That rescued mine. I baked it for 8 minutes @195°C.

I am trying to install a GTX680 in my Sager 8170 (P170HMx). I cant seem to get past the 2 beeps from restart after installing my card. I have the vBIOS flash ready to go but my laptop doesn't go past the boot screen except to an infinite blinking cursor. Here is what I am working with:

    Aptio AMI 2010 version 2.10.1208
    BIOS: 1.01.10LS2
    KBC / EC: 1.00.09SA2
    Motherboard: P170HMx

This is what is listed in my BIOS boot. I have set it to boot from usb. When I leave my ATI 6990m card in, it will boot to the usb and let me proceed if I want. I bought an NVIDIA GTX680 card from ebay. The vBIOS version is : 80:04:67:00:01. I have been looking for a BIOS to flash my Sager system with in hopes it will populate the 680 card, so I can backwards flash it in hopes of getting it to work. Can someone please give me some guidance on how to go about this the proper way.I feel like I have overlooked something. Also when I purchased the 680GTX the seller said it was from a Clevo system.....If that helps.........

    Thanks in advance....V/R Brien

could be that u have one of those vbios versions that are "barely" compatible with the HM series. u should let the laptop sit for a while, could be that it will eventually finish a proper boot. just be aware that it takes quite a while, so just let it sit overnight or smth like that... for more details, @Prema is the man to contact, unfortunately im not in the know concerning the 680M, i was more of a 7970M kinda guy ;)

Thanks for the info. I was getting ready to do a blind flash to see if that would work, will rethink situation and might try your suggestion first.......

Yes, you need to clip the vBIOS chip...

So I tried that and I am having no luck booting into windows with my new"er" card. It will get there just fine with my 6990. Any other advice I can build from. I really would like for this to work......

There are two potential "issues" with P170HM + GTX 680m Combo's.

    - First of all you need the P150/170EM Series vBios, which would be this one: 80.04.29.00.01. I'm aware of only this one that worked flawlessly in the HM-Series.

    - Another issue is that you could have a MoBo Revision which is incompatible with the 6XXm Series. Follow this thread.

"Having nowhere else to turn for help, I shipped my laptop back to my reseller to see if they could reflash the 680m on a machine with optimus back down to the base vBIOS. Unfortunately, I just found out that they can't get the card to work because apparently my motherboard revision is itself incompatible with the 6xx series GPUs. Supposedly, I'm on Rev3 when I need to be up to Rev5 or higher to use the 680m. (Even though I purchased my P170HM in December 2011, I've got an early version motherboard near the end of the P170HM lifecycle!?) Today is the first time I've heard of this incompatibility in the time I've been researching my upgrade options, but my reseller advised that the revision number is visible on the mobo."

If this doesn't help, you might wanna try the 7970m instead. You have to make sure that this Card is

    - Rev 1.2! -> VERY important!!! ;)

    - If you have a LG Panel, you might have a Problem with this:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/666401-online-petition-bios-updates-clevo-hm-model-series.html

"NP8170 (P170HM) w/ NVIDIA or AMD GPU + LG LCD panel, AMD 7970M may or may not be supported, special EDID Firmware may need to be flashed to the LCD panel. Sager can provide this firmware update as long as the user pays for both way shipping & labor.
It is the LG LCD Panel, it lacked the right EDID Firmware...."

Good luck! Hope, you can sort it out!

The Mobo revision incompatibility was busted, it was spread by Malibal cause they didn't know the .67 vbios caused the incompatibility. In other words, the 680M always works flawlessly on any P170HM regardless of its motherboard, as long as the vbios is right (the .29 version).

Oh, alright! Thanks for clarification!

Then @Brien the .29 vBios-Version should do the trick. Did you get a 4GB Clevo Card or is it a 2GB DELL one?

I got the 4gb Clevo I believe, its what the eBay seller said it was. Great news, I am running it currently. Can someone tell me where the premodded Nvidia driver is located so I can grab it and install it. I am so happy about this, and I want to thank all of you for your patience. This forum truly rocks. Also if someone can point me to the modded driver, I did learn something that will be valuable for all those doing a blind flash like I had to do..........

So now I have another problem. I blind flashed the GTX 680 card and now my computer screen comes on. However it does not register in the BIOS and the GPU-Z looks like this and I do not know how to fix this, I have read post until I feel like my eyes are going to bleed. Can someone please tell me what went wrong? Incase you are wondering nothing else populates on the other two tabs across the top....The card by the way is a 4gb card, so there's that also. I cannot figure out how to get a driver to install. I have modded the inf's as per instruction and have tried a variety of drivers old and new. My head hurts now.........lol....Can someone step in and show me what I have missed............?

The 2990MB memory size bugs me. Just glad for you that the blindflash worked! I guess the inf-mod didn't succeed, as it shows "ForceWare 0.00" and it should show 361.91 or whatever driver you tried to install. Can you post the string that you entered? I mean this one (the following is mine):

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0270.1558% = Section015, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_72001558

*Update: You may want to use this string:
    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0000.1558% = Section063, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_00001558

or if it fails, try section017

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0000.1558% = Section017, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_00001558

And at the end of nvcv.inf use
    NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0000.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M"
(and add spaces before the second " depending on how many other 680M entries there are.

You can also get issues with the quadro/firepro cards not shipped in the machine.

The 7970M if you get the right version, nvidia cards are usually easier to come by.
