    Hi !

a got a 2.5 year old p170hm with an 485 gpu that has been starting too act wierd a couple of days ago.

so now to the problem, when just idling or watching a movie etc the computer works all perfect.
But as soon as im starting a game or for an example furmark my gpu temp goes too 78 celsius the it starts too make a beeping sound for about 30 seconds then it shuts off.

so now to the things a have tried.

    Freshly installed windows.
    new drivers(tried old ones too).
    new thermal paste.
benched my cpu with prime 95, no problems.
checked up on my memory with memtest86, no problems.

i know that 78 degrees celsius isnt much off an temperature in gpu standards, but why are my laptop reacting with saying its dangerous then does an emergency shutdown?
The strange thing is that it just happend one day when starting up Diablo 3, 10 seconds in main menu then the beeps then shutdown.

2 possible areas to focus on
    1. Motherboard ram try one module and test and then the other see if issue persists
    2. The gpu ram could be playing up.

Watching the video there is no corruption of image quality so i would say gpu is ok/safe.
There are glitches which possibly point to ram on motherboard. Check one module at a time. Even though prime and memtest can reveal no error this is no indication of faulty modules.
What is your cpu temps on load?

    Edit:
I'll also add that you hit about 76c and temp rises quickly and then the beeps start so it could be not enough paste on gpu. Can you explain how you repaste the gpu?
    Use this guide http://www.innovationcooling.com/application.html
I also recommend using icd7. There is too much fluff and crap out there thermal paste wise and they do more harm than good.
Good luck and keep us updated with your testing.

    Ok, thank you for replying.
Do you know what that beeping sound means ? what is that type of sound called ?

can you explain how i test the motherboard ram and the gpu ram ?

my cpu temp is around 65 degress when running prime for about an hour, idle mode around 40 degress.

I repasted with Arctic Silver 5, i took a good amount of paste and then scrapped it out a soft piece of plastic smooth and kinda thick.
i watched a couple of how to on y-tube before applying

Ok, i would try to repaste the gpu one more time. The temp of the gpu rises fast which could mean very little thermal paste.
The beep code you have to count how many beeps and are they short or long?

Try a repaste and make sure copper cooler screws are nice and tight and follow the 1234 numbers when screwing.
Arctic silver should be ok but then again its no match for icd7 i have found.

ok i will try that at once, is there a way to override and cancel the bios beep warning ?

the beeps are kinda long, the count varies, it shuts of at a certain temp.

No way to override motherboard beeps.
Is there a number to the amount of beeps listen for any pauses or pattern.
I'd say check your paste and screws for proper connection.

You could try a complete tear down and rebuild. Also try an ec reset by removing the ac and battery.

Check the fans are spinning too and at the right speed.
