Hey guys, I have a prostar P170HM and it tends to freeze for a couple seconds every few minutes in Diablo 3 and Skyrim (havn't tried other games yet). It's really annoying! Any idea what could be causing it?

    My laptop's build:

    i7-2670qm
    8gb ddr3
    AMD Radeon HD 6990M
    Windows 7 ultimate

I also had them apply IC Diamond Thermal Paste to both the GPU and CPU

Any help would not go amiss. Thanks guys!

Perhaps running out of video RAM? Try turning down the texture settings a notch.

how old is the laptop and have you cleaned the fans and vents out at all.
also what temperatures are you getting after 30 minutes of gaming.
you can download monitoring software in my sig below.

What kind of hard drive do you have? Is it an SSD, if so try updating firmware.

Try running the game in windowed mode and monitor your CPU speed. If you found the cpu clock decreases to 798MHz sometimes while in game, download ThrottleStop and disable the BD Prochot.

See if you get those lags when browsing. If yes and you have SSD - it might be the problem.

Sorry that i havn't kept up to date on this, had to move right after starting this thread; it's been a nightmare since.

Turning down settings made no difference.

My laptop was purchased in November of 2011; it's always been this way, since i got it.

I'll run temperature and cpu speed monitoring tonight.

My hard drive is a standard run of the mill hard drive, not an SSD.

*also, my computer doesn't just hang while gaming, it seems to always hang no matter what i do: Ie. i notice it hanging for a second or two every now and then while working in Microsoft Word.

Does your HDD spin-down? If you have two, the second HDD may be spinning down, and then needs to spin-up when the PC tries access files from it causing a lag.

Does it do the same when you set your PC in performance mode while plugged-in:
    1) Windows Power Settings: CPU Min/Max = 50%/100%, no power savings anywhere
    AND
    2) Clevo Hotkey: Set to Performance Mode.

Try HWinfo64. You might be able to see how your core clocks are behaving as well as temperatures (and maybe fan rpm as well with the latest beta). I had something similar happen when I had a fan that was starting to seize.

I have only the one Hard Drive.

When plugged in, I have the computer set on High Performance mode.

Could you try checking the SMART status of the drive?
If it hangs every now and then while you're working in Word,
it might be that your HDD has problems.
Though, this problem seems rather strange, and I haven't encountered it so far over the years

What sort of anti-virus are you running? Some AV can be resource hogs and it may tie up the RAM or CPU more than necessary.

Also, try running hard drive diagnostics to see if there are issues with the hard drive that may have gone slightly unnoticed.

SeaTools for the Seagate drive Downloads | Seagate

Data Lifeguard Diagnostics if it is a Western Digital WD Support / Downloads / Mobile & AV-25

The last thing I would suggest is backing up your data and reloading the OS and drivers, something may have been messed up in Windows registry or something. Unlikely, but not entirely impossible.
