My headphone jack isn't working. I tried it yesterday and got it to work, but with horrible sound quality. Now it's not working at all. I saw a few other threads that described the same problem on older models. Do I need to install some software before it will work, or is my jack defective?

Can you describe the horrible sound quality? Are you hearing noise and interference on it, or is it just not that great sound? If you're getting the former, it could very well be defective and you may want to contact your retailer. If it's the latter, try installing the THX software from the driver disk as well as trying out the settings there and in the Realtek software.

If that still doesn't help, check out the section in this thread:

The sound on this model isn't top of the line, so you may want to look into an external sound card if you're more of an audiophile.

The sound through the headphones would distort and grow quieter at random intervals. All this is while THX is activated. Right now, when I plug in headphones, I get sound initially, but then sound quickly fades away and I stop getting sound altogether.
