    Hello folks,

I've recently had an issue of my LCD screen flickering in and out, usually requiring me to flip the LCD panel back and forth to regain the picture. I'm assuming the ribbon cable is loose at one end or the other, but I can't find any instructions on how to disassemble to laptop in order to fix it. The manual contains information on RAM and hard drive upgrades, but nothing on the LCD connection. I tried to find some answers on the forums, but only came across some vaguely related information for a Dell XPS laptop.

Does anyone have good info for how to do this on the P170HM?

Thanks for any assistance you can offer!

I had the same problem on an older laptop. I opened it up, detached the LCD cable, dusted everything, and plugged it back in. It's working good as new now.

Okay, so I thought I solved this but it has come back. I even took apart the LCD frame and resat the connector on that side. I tried to be methodical and do a check after each adjustment. What I'm finding is that it looks to be something other than the ribbon cable. If I press hard enough on the keyboard (and down on the right and left sides of the trackpad), I can get it to flicker in and out. The same if I just tilt and move the laptop different ways. It's almost like a weird grounding issue (if that makes sense).

Anyone have any suggestions? It's getting pretty bad now and I find myself constantly fiddling with the laptop just so I can see the screen! :)

Thanks for any suggestions. I may end up having to send it out to Malibal, but I'm trying what I can before taking that step.

    Hi Beatbox32,

I have just come accross your thread and I am having the same problem with my P170HM and was wondering if you managed to find out what the problem was and if you solved it.

    Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Most of the times that´s a damaged LCD Cable. Get a new cable, fully disassemble the laptop (easy task on this model), and replace it.

Did you already try reseating the video cable at the board, as well? If reseating it doesn't work at either connection, then it's probably the cable itself. See if you can get a replacement through the manufacturer or a third party parts supplier. :)

Usually your initial reseller can be a good point of contact for such parts too.

Just make sure to do it quick. Mine did this on my 5797 and it eventually shorted and fried the motherboard and now I have to part the whole system out minus the motherboard.

    Hey Nubby!

Probably not what you want to hear, but I shipped my laptop back to the reseller for repair since I couldn't figure it out. They were unable to reproduce the problem and when I received it back, it no longer had an issue. So did something bump it and fix it during shipping?? Who knows.

I never did replace the LCD cable. I did reseat it on both ends and clean the connectors as much as possible.

I wish you luck! I know how frustrating it can be.

    Phillip

Funny how that works sometimes, haha. Transit can cause any number of problems - and ironically, it can even fix a few (inadvertently). If it comes up again, make sure to notify your reseller that it appears to be intermittent.
