I currently own a P170HM and have been very happy with it. I have been thinking about upgrading to a new laptop, and one of the things I noticed was that the P170HM, P170EM, and P170SM almost all look the same (at least as far as the photos go).

My question is this, what is the difference in the casings between the P170HM, P170EM, and P170SM-A? Is there anything preventing me from purchasing the motherboard, CPU, and GPU for the P170SM-A and installing it into my P170HM casing? If it is a small difference, like the placement of screws or whatnot, is it something that I could modify?

    Thanks

No, both the technical and physical changes aren't anything minute that can be easily modified to accommodate the HM case.

And... the case itself isn't all that pricey. It's like saving a cereal box to reuse it.

It's a shame majority of laptops have limited upgrade ability. Not like desktops where you can just swap out any component you want. It's completely future proof. One of the main reasons I personally, would want to keep the same computer is so that I don't have to waste that extra time installing back all of my programs, etc.

Well that should not really change much if you go from intel + nvidia to intel + nvidia for instance.

But that's the issue with the issue with a custom form factor.
