P170SM-A GTX 870m upgrade to GTX 1060

I currently have a Prostar P170SM-A with a GTX 870m and I am looking to upgrade to the GTX 1060 that I found on eBay. Is there any issues with my model and installing this card firmware and software? Would it just be plug in and play because it is listed as a compatible laptop model.
I was also wondering If I should just sell my laptop and buy a new one with a GTX 1070 instead because the mxm slot is becoming outdated. I was looking at the PREMA mod but the gtx 1060 was not one of the listed cards. And is the RX 480 availible for this laptop?

Personally, I would get a 1070 laptop. 1070 is an absolute beast of a card.

The RX480 has no mobile MXM cards (there are MXM cards but not designed for mobile).

The 1060 as a standard MXM should basically be plug n play, not many upgrades have been done though because it's barely more powerful than a 980M. It's not that the MXM slot is outdated... there are very few of the new generation cards made to the MXM 3.0b standard (bigger board size, added power connectors). That 1060 and a couple of 1070s are it. The RX480 is definitely a no go in any Clevo.

It's the usual consideration ... higher risk of GPU upgrade vs higher cost of laptop upgrade

The slot is physically and electrically MXM for all variants but only the following appear to be strict 3.0b:

The MSI 1070 notebook version is not standard 3.0b size but is wider on one side and has a protruding tab on the other.

This is the one that seems most compatible so far as there are various vBIOSes out there for troubleshooting - but physical mods can be required in some laptops to accommodate the annoying extra bits outside the standard 105x82mm MXM 3.0b rectangle (if there's critical components too close to the standard board, fitting this card is not possible)

There are of course Clevo versions which have the much bigger PCB size and which all require an additional connector - which if you wire wrong as one Chinese guy found out the hard way fries the card. It's technically possible but it's difficult hard mods and few have tried

 

GTX 1060 would be p&p whereas the 1070 had been a pain in the butt for the few ones who tested them out.

@Prema has one 1060 running like a champ in a P150EM.

As the guy says in his thread: you have to buy the EN1070 and pull the card. Not only obviously voiding the warranty but the guy asked Zotac and the card is not sold separately, he tried a 970M in the Zbox which didn't work so AFAICT the rest of the unit is useless. It's an expensive way to do it

As well as no guarantee it would work in a Clevo (Clevo laptops require an extra thermal signal from the card which is always present in Clevo cards and can sometimes be worked around in non-clevo cards like the MSI 1070 - AFAIK no Zotac 1070 has yet been put in a Clevo to test this)

Im looking at the same upgrade on the same machine :Clevo P17SM-A from 880M to the 1070 (I have opened my own thread but maybe I should just follow on here XD).

I contacted Eurocom who said these series laptops dont support eDP panels and are only LVDS so an upgrade is pointless due to not being able to meet the 120hz capability of the 10XX series cards. Im skeptical as there are other benefits to a new GPU. Furthermore "Intel Graphics Control Panel" says i DO have eDP on the board (meaning I can the motherboard can upgrade to a 120Hz panel/monitor): https://goo.gl/MA7ijY Is there a way to conclusively know if my M board has eDP?

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is a panel upgrade needed and does this Clevo board have an eDP chip to connect the new panel to? I have found an LVDS to eDP cnversion chip online: https://goo.gl/a8kj3n

 

Wait a few weeks, Gecube is making and currently testing a true MXM 3.0b 1070 and I think one of their test beds is a P170SM. The iGPU (Optimus) should handle the conversion to LVDS, as it has in 1060 upgrades (and RX480 but that failed for a separate reason). Only when GPU is wired directly to display does the lack of LVDS output matter

 

Yes the IGP handles all display outputs in this machine so LVDS is not a concern.

 

do you know if gtx1060 works with this p170sm? do you have infos about gtx1070 mxm?

 

Here are some pics of GTX 10 series in P17xSMA model. Both 1060 and 1070 are standard size 82x105mm so they fit inside. GTX 1060 only needs thermal pads to be re-adjusted, GTX 1070 requires modded VGA heatsink.

 

What differences will there be to the zotac's, eurocom's, and now Gecube's gtx 1070 card? is it in performance?
