P170SM-A SSD temperature, is this not too high ?

    Dear forum readers,

It's about time I begin wondering about this, since it's already more than 3 years old. Here's an HWMonitor screenshot :

64 °C is rather high, isn't it ? I suspect it's common among Clevo notebooks...

Safe operating temperature for that drive is 0-70C. Have you tried running a storage benchmark to see if it changes and if it's reporting the right temperature?

Didn't, but this is measured on an idle machine, so still high it seems. Of course HWMonitor could be reporting a wrong temperature... Supposing the temperature is correct, do you think it could come from the disk itself ? I'd rather suspect other components in the Notebook are heating up the disk, against which I don't think I can do much more than what I'm already doing (such as cleaning the machine incl. fans twice a year).

I have similar problem with my 240GB Crucial, it seems like VRM malfunction on drive PCB, because drive have good performance, but have much too high temperature (up to 76°C). I added small fan for controller cooling, but I want to replace this drive in nearly future.

That's interesting, did you look for updates on Crucial's website ? Not that I did it myself yet...

Have you checked if it really feels that hot? Look at a review, should there be a thermal pad?

I finally checked mine with Crucial's Storage Executive (sorry it's in french, but I guess things are still clear enough) :

    Here's the SMART report :

So this not only confirms the temperature and that my disk's firmware doesn't need updating, but shows it reached 84°C (183°F in the scale almost nobody uses any more) at some point.

I've seen a statistical study about SSD data durability whose results were that the lower the storage (i.e. inactive) temperature and the higer the running temperature is, the longer it lives, however the study didn't include temperatures beyond normal running temperatures, and I doubt the disk is overjoyed at 84°C...

No, I decide to leave it as it is until I buy a new drive. But then I will take some voltage measurements, maybe I will be able to find source of this problem.

You probably talking about m.2 drives and they definitely should have additional cooling, but I'm talking about mSATA drive mounted on SATA->mSATA adapter, placed in SATA slot under GPU PCB in my P870DM, and yes, palmrest above drive is definitely uncomfortable warm.

Please keep us informed if you ever find a solution to this. For now, I too am likely to wait until I get new hardware.

You can still pad it to the PCB of that adapter to help.

I will try this (fortunately I have m.2 thermal pads from P751ZM).

And I have another "Crucial Victim" - drive in my friend in P170SM-A also have temps oscillating around 75°C.

Has the failure rate for them been reported as being high too then?

Aaand finally I checked voltages on this hot drive - all of them are good, VRM's are cool. Two IC's are hot - IC with Micron logo, probably DRAM chip and noticebly cooler Marvell controller. I have no idea, why this DRAM can be so hot, when it's fully functional...

Thanks for the heads up ! I wonder up to which point the reason could just be that the disk is in a place where air flow is insufficient and/or near hotter components such as the GPU...
