As the title suggest will the P170em be compatible with the new amd 8000 series coming next year? I'm looking to buy the P170em with the 7970m at the moment. However if it is compatible should I buy the em and upgrade it later? Or wait until the release of the next generation of clevo models?

As long as the BIOS permits it, yes, they should be.
What may happen next year, although it's just a guess, some notebook manufacturers my include higher TDP cards. Remember, MXM 3.1 brought the power ceiling to 120W if I am not mistaking.

Hmmm I'm a bit conflicted right now. Don't know if I should purchase the em or wait on the next model. Worried that the current model might not support the 8000.

As for cooling goes, do you think the em and the next generation will be on par?

huh? when did that happen? i thought the 3.1 revision just added pci-e 3.0 capability and was otherwise completely identical to 3.0b?

anyways, at this point its all pure guesswork. no idea what the compatibilities will be like, same goes for power consumption, heat dissipation, features, performance, etc.

Yes as far as I know the new revision did just add Gen3 PCI-E, MXM has always been a bit.... fluffy when it comes to power limits.
