Hey, I have an aging Clevo P170em with an hd7970m in it.

I kinda wanted to replace it, but to be honest, I don't game too much anymore and the laptop itself is fine.

    Except the keyboard.

I am sorry forum, but it is garbage. It was fairly crappy when I got the laptop and now 4 years later, it is abysmal. Plus I kind of sort of broke the backspace button, so there is that, too.

So I was thinking to replace it. What is the best keyboard I could get for it? I don't care about the backlight, only about the key typing quality.

    I did some digging.

    I have this keyboard: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Clevo-P...-Swedish-SD-/161568390984?hash=item259e39ff48

What I want is this one here by steelseries: http://www.ebay.nl/itm/NEW-for-MSI-...tem233082cb2b&_uhb=1&clk_rvr_id=1148698930604

Will this work? I read the mega thread here http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...lit-keyboard-for-p150em-p170em.670648/page-19 but I am not quite sure if I understand the differences well.

EDIT: is this german one the same ? http://www.ebay.de/itm/MSI-GT60-GT7...218700?hash=item1c557b278c:g:r60AAOSw9N1VlBfG

Doubt any other keyboard will work but the one your machine came with. External keyboards a better option or sell the gaming laptop and get a Business class with a proper keyboard.

You only choices are the keyboard it came with and if your system board has no blacklit keyboard options you can't build one. You choices are to get factory keyboard from Factory or replacement from eBay that off brand or used keyboard to replace the dead keyboard.
If you want to sell or make it portable stay away from ext keyboard your asking for more baggage then you need.

Well, got the keyboard. While the connectors fit and they keyboards have the same layout and the manufacturer is the same, I get jarbled text when I type. Looks like they changed something. Sad :(

Hey guys, sorry for double posting, but I figure I can get more help in the dedicated clevo forum.

I described the problem here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/p170em-best-keyboard-replacement.800022/

Perhaps a mod can move/merge the other thread here? Thanks!

I reckon I understand now what happened. I got the wrong windows version just like SMGjohn did back in the original keyboard replacement thread.
